I'm working on my 76 Pacer and I can't get it to charge. It has a good alternator in it. I even tested it while the car was running by full fielding it by sticking a little screwdriver through the D shaped hole in the back and it showed 14 bolts at the battery. So I assume it's the voltage regulator, I just don't know where it is! The little red wire that connects to the F terminal on the alternator has 12 volts even with the ignition off which seems odd to me assuming it's the feild wire. Any help on locating the regulator and also where I could find a new one would be greatly appreciated.
Party on, Miles.

The voltage regulator is built into the alternator. Your screwdriver "test" just likely bypassed a failed diode in the voltage regulator. Not a recommended way of testing as that could have burned out the field winding. Likely burned out a diode regardless.
Your alternator needs rebuilding the voltage regulator or replacing. In "most" cases, replacement is cheaper. It could also be one bad cell in the battery. Disconnecting it or better taking it out, charging and load testing can tell you that. |

Full fielding the alternator should get you way more than 14 volts. You'll get like 18 volts when you do that.
The regulator is inside the alternator. It's a self-contained charging system, and one of the best there is. That alternator needs rebuilding or replacement. |
