Maybe the car was stripes delete, or anything else that would cause the spec , which I interpreted as special handling . My advice is to enjoy the car and don’t get emotional about how unique it is.  Time will tell.   maybe it was damaged in production, which really isn’t a plus situation

How about a "leftover" DEALER painted 74 color to sell remaining stock.
Could account for over spray.

Enjoy the car for what it is and it's unique color. In time you'll find out what the "real" story is about the paint color and the SPEC trim tag.
Clearly at least the door was repainted at some point as the factory did not attach the trim tags until after the car body was painted.

Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

Oh, trust me I will enjoy the car. Just owning two weeks has already been an adventure. It's basically untouched for the past 25 years. This all started because I just wanted to match the paint to do the roof and the areas that I do rust repair on. I'm 100% sure the color is G4 Plum Metallic.. buy the way I can see behind the door tag......its also the same color as the rest of the car. This is the first complete and original muscle car that I have ever bought.

Somebody on the forum should remember who ordered the 69 AMX new painted a Porsche color. I believe he was in Texas. He sold the car 2-3 years ago

I can tell you that sometimes, during the model year, AMC added or removed a paint color. I'll see if I have any notes in my '73 Data Color Upholstery book on that possibility.

74 Hornet Hatchback X twins (since 1977)
62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384
70 AMX 360 4-speed (since 1981)

Hello again,  The AMX isn't front and center just yet to get worked on but it's getting closer, but I do mess with from time to time. Today's task was to remove the paint from the plastic covered vin tag. Some acetone, masking tape, and paper towels did the trick. I can now verify the vin on the door matches the dash and the car was built in February of 73. Also the paint color behind the plastic edges of the sticker is indeed the same color as the rest of the car.
