I recently purchased one of these from Rock Auto, for $44.89
It arrived after a delay from DHL.
I checked it over, only to discover that it only opened to about 1/3.
Has any one else seen this?
I sent it back.
Now I'm waiting for the replacement. Fearing it will be the same.
It was manufactured in Mexico.
It was anodized the correct color.

Just a few short years ago I bought the same thing, with correct function, from
Amazon for $17.

Well, they do still have them on Amazon:

I’d say the crazy price increase is due primarily to the recent crazy inflation. I’m just glad they’re still available - a few years from now $50 will seem cheap.

And the same valve from the AMC parts vendors is $25 more.

I have 2 on the shelf here that I bought from Summit years back. I opened the boxes to check, and they too only uncover about 1/3 of the passage inside.
I can say that the one I have installed on my 70 AMX does put out good heat, though it doesn't get driven in very cold weather.

I read somewhere recently possibly on FB where someone mentioned the water valve is not supposed to open fully, if anyone has an original or NOS for comparison it would be interesting see how far they open.

It could be designed that way to restrict flow so as not to pop the heater core. Later engines have a separate flow restrictor in addition to the heater valve - my ‘92 Firebird SBC 305 V8 has a separate flow restrictor in the LH head in addition to the vacuum-controlled heater valve. I know, because I had to replace the restrictor since it had corroded.

I think that is correct! I have an NOS one I can dig out and check.

OK,

I couldn't take it any longer. I did it. I removed the Amazon valve.

I did install the Amazon control valve I bought several years back on the White70JavelinSST
a couple weeks ago as the old one (original) wouldn't close anymore.

I had to shred the original one to remove it. I had to break off the top and get a socket on the hex to turn it out. An open end wrench would not work at all.

So I have a toasted original and a new one installed on the engine.

I took the new one back off today and looked inside it as I moved the lever back and forth.

It only opens 1/3 as well.

I'm Sorry RockAuto, I should not have returned the valve, it's not defective.

I believe the valve is designed to only open 1/3.

I did operate the heater a couple times and it blows screaming hot air with only 1/3 opening.

Guess I should have just kept my mouth shut and did my own research.

Thanks for the responses.

Don't beat yourself up.  Minnesota is like ND, in the winter you want a heater to WORK.  Your concern was not misplaced IMHO.
