would like to put a 401 engine and transmission in my 68 amc rebel. what should i look for?

401 engines are getting scares and costly to build you would be better off looking for a 360 in a jeep or something but if your willing to spend the big bucks and lucky to find a 401 go for it as for a trans you would look for the 727 amc trans

I think a 401 block is about a $1000 premium. 401 Crank might be $1000 premium in today's market. Aftermarket pistons and rods, heads and valvetrain, and all the parts and machine work to do an engine are the same whether 360 or 401. If you can find one, and the cost differential doesn't bust your budget, by all means get a 401. But with Edelbrock heads and a modern roller cam, a properly pieced together 360 will outperform most of the stockish 401s out there.

i have a 727 AMC trans i won't be using. shipping would be a killer though, i'm in AZ
