Are the motor mounts for installing a 232 in a '64 American different from those for a 195.6 OHV? If so, anyone know where I can get a pair? Thx. Steve

It's not just the mounts that are different. The crossmember is different also. You can use a crossmember and mounts from any 65 or newer 2wd small car (American, Hornet, Gremlin, Concord, Spirit) that came with a 199, 232, or 258. Also, you'll need to use a short water pump (65 American or Jeep CJ-5 with and AMC inline six) and flip the brackets on the radiator to push it forward. In 1966, they lengthened the engine compartment a couple inches to make the engine a better fit. THe 196's are pretty short inline sixes.

And you also need the skinny fan, with cutouts to clear the crank pulley bolt! Two bad AMC didn't make the 64-65 American engine bay for the 232 engine!

If you look carefully, you'll see that it's a very tight fit!

This is all good info,as I am planning an engine swap soon. Gonna put a 95 4.0 and a 5 speed from a 95 Cherokee in my 65 American. So I guess I'll need my waterpump, and fan from my old motor. any other problems I might find? By the way my car has A/C. I don't think it is factory, but it is a Rambler A/C unit.

The radiator core support was changed on the 1965 Americans so the 232 could be used.

O K - so now the important questions are: anyone out there have a '65+ Crossmember for an American with a 232? How about the motor mounts too? Functioning short water pump (I'm presuming that a 196 pump won't fit a 232 - correct)? counsel62@hotmail.com
