    Posted: Jul/13/2021 at 8:36am
We have a 1987 Eagle with the straight 6 the PO plugged most of the vacuum and let's say does not run very well. If all of the parts were there it would not be so bad but most are missing. I have seem a few posts referring to a fuel injection conversion.

From what I understand (but need more info) is the head and intakes from a Jeep 6 will fit on the Eagle engine. What I was wondering is what is needed for this transformation? Will the whole ecu etc. be needed?

Any help would be appreciated.

hi there are options. One is the 4.0 head and manifolds and complete efi setup. Another, and simpler one, is to keep what you have and install a Holley Sniper BBD, and intank fuel pump module. good luck, gz

I appreciate all of the responses you guys have given. This is great to see the support. I do however have some bad news. So we changed the oil yesterday and now the engine developed a knock. We are not sure where the knock is coming from at this point but from what we have seen from the undercarriage and how the engine was "customized" this car did not have a good life. We are trying to bring it back but need to investigate further.
With that said I was wondering if there is a way to pull a 6 cylinder engine from a jeep and would it bolt up to the AMC? Has anyone done this procedure before. I have seen comments regarding putting a v8 in but sounds like there would need to be alot of customizing involved. That would certainly solve our problems but do not want to create any more by needed additional drive train..........although there is no telling what condition the rest of the drive train is currently.
Thanks, in advance.

hi, any 258 will bolt right in, but you will need to swap oil pans, the Eagle oil pan is Eagle specific.  good luck,   gz

ps, putting a V8 into an Eagle has been done, but not often, and with mixed results. Not recommended unless you are an ACE fabricator.

The 'knock' could simply be a stuck hydraulic lifter, which is common on the 80's 258 engines.
Do you hear it at idle?  Or only under load leaving a stop sign?

Here is an old trick for the lifter tap: drain out a quart of the oil that you just put in it, and in place of it put a quart of new transmission fluid.   Start the engine and let it idle for an hour or 2 until the 'knock' subsides.  Change all the oil and new filter and then drive it around to see if it goes away.
Do not drive it with the transmission fluid in!!
If the lifter is extremely worn this may not make a difference, but if its just sticky this will fix it.
If its a rod knock it wont change.

also what can happen is that the torque converter bolts come loose and hit the back of the block.
put some locktight on them and re tighten them.

We did hear it at idle. We suspect the po put a heavy grade oil in it prior. We used 10w 40 with some Lucas. It sounds like a rod knock very deep sound but oddly in the center of the block.

I did find a 94 Cherokee for cheap and we were wondering if it has a crank position sensor, how to install since it should be connected in the trans.
