Hey Folks,
New to this forum, referred by someone from IFSJA, to get best advice on my 401 engine that is in my new to me GW.

As the truck had sat for 18 yrs (2004 till 4-2022), and PO said just 2000 miles after a .030 bore & rebuild, that I have the paperwork showing when it was done. Right now still trying to get spark to the distributor.

As that is a whole other story, I have some extra parts that came with it for the engine, drivetrain, interior, exterior, and want to be sure I keep what I really need for the overall build.

Right now, the 401 is set up with OEM 2-barrel MC2150 HA Comp carb, OEM manifolds intake/exhaust (new and single). I believe everything was off the original 360?

Engine is free and starter turns it over easily.

Oil looks really good.

I want to use this truck for weekend outings pulling a camper (16' Scamp right now) and hauling gear, so need to determine if 2 bbl will be best when I get it road ready. My initial calculations for CFM needs say no, but want to get it rolling first, and see how it does as is!

IF.......I do decide I want more pulling power, I have an OEM 4 bbl intake to swap out the 2 bbl, and would use a Q-jet carb with it.

I appreciate and welcome any/all input regarding the 401, as I know they are a sought after engine, because they are proven to be reliable and sturdy.

Thanks :)

Nice truck!
It looks as everything may be original except for the engine, distributor (original was better ,PO) and coil?
If you lack spark, buy a replacement ignition module if it has one of these still installed:
The 2150 carburetor can be "modified" for 400+ CFM. Not bad for a street truck. #62 jets for the 401
(believe jets from a Holley 4v fit, been a while),  polishing/match porting the venturies and throat. Venturies need the most work to open up the throat for the biggest gain.
Drive it for 200 miles and then change all the fluids to baseline the truck for future maintenance. Also gives you an idea of radiator/transmission/transfer case/differential ... condition.
If you do end up doing performance upgrades, keep all those original pieces in case they are required later.

The truck came with MSD-6 and coil, but since went back to OEM ICM & coil as unable to get spark off the coil.

Even did an OEM harness to eliminate any bad wiring, and still no spark.

Getting ready to dive into the distributor when it cools down some, so not so miserable to work on it.

Have a known working one another FSJ owner from Oregon sent to me, trying to assist with my toils!

Will see if the pick up is good or needs replaced.

Yes, I am one to save every nut & bolt, as you never know when you can use it somewhere else.

Not even opposed to reinstall the MSD once we get it running, then would have an extra ICM & coil for my CJ5. Actually verified both are good when bought them, by plugging them onto the CJ5.

Good info on the carb, and would not have given it a second glance, had you not pointed it out.

With all that needs done from sitting so long, hoping to have it driveable before end of year, as Covid really put the cramp on the Jeep budget :/

Nice Jeep !

Get it running first and drive it some :)  !

A simple 4 bbl manifold and a q-jet is a great idea !

I love q-jets...they are awesome and I believe the absolute best carb for your application !
Best 1/4 mile 8.99, 1/8 mile 5.71, 60 foot 1.27, no power adders

The Q-jet was brought up by a FSJ owner in Minnesota, that he runs in a J10 w/401.

As I have a super good running MC2100 (built in Sept. 1966) on my '81 CJ5 w/258, and now the MC2150 I have yet to get running, just could not see the difference in engine size being a good match for the 401 to really perform as a tow unit pulling up through mountain passes with essentially the same carb.

As I have the 727 auto, which is a beast along with the 401, my weakest link I could see would be the carb.

I will run it and see how it does, then if anything will be needed to change for the better, will address it when the time comes.

So far there are 2 modifications I have and won't change, to keep the truck as mostly original like I want it (do not care about resale or bling), which are the 4" high arc springs and the 401.

Aside from that, I will run it as is with the carb (no FI here), as that is one of the things I love about these older trucks.

I have FI on my 2007 Dakota, and that is enough, but it did come that way....and somebody else has to get paid to fix it. I fix my own carb issues :/
