The problem is finding decent donors, as the Jeep XJ and ZJ you find in wrecking yards now have 200k or more miles on them, and of course you have to adapt the one bolt that doesn't line up.  Also, I later found that the Jeep XJ box is only a 14.1:1 ratio, not the 12.7 ratio I thought it was when I wrote that.  The '73 Javelins had aa 14.4:1 ratio from the factory.  (I'm not sure about the '71 Javelins.) While the Jeep box does give a more modern car feel due to higher internal valving pressures, I now feel that there's not enough of a difference between the two to be worth all the trouble.

Lares does make a rebuilt box with a 10:1 ratio for a decent price, though I passed on it because I think 10:1 might be too fast for a street Javelin.  I have that exact ratio in my Focus ST, and it's great in a small car like that, but can be a little darty at high speeds.  That's why in my current '73 project I've gone with a new Borgeson 12.7:1 unit, though it is more money than I really wanted to spend.

It would be interesting to hear feedback from those who have the Lares 10:1 box in their Javelins.  Maybe my reservations about the quick ratio are unfounded?

I would be very interested in hearing from anyone that has used one also. I am considering a 10:1 rack and pinion that they sell for 2 different cars I am working on. Just seems very quick ratio. That's somewhat what I am looking for but a rather large investment without hearing opinion of anyone who has tried!

I would be afraid of a really quick ratio on a short wheelbase car like AMX, Gremlin, Spirit.

I apparently have a non-stock Saginaw 5691676 power steering box on the Javelin.

It is 3-LTL not the standard 4-LTL.

Any idea what is the ratio of this steering gear box and if anyone has this on their car, how do you like it?

It really would have been customer friendly if Saginaw had better markings and codes on their boxes...

5691676 is the stock 14.4:1 Saginaw box that replaced the 17.5:1 ratio in the early 70's.  Not sure exactly when AMC started using the quicker ratio, but I suspect '70 or '71.  When buying rebuilt boxes, you want to be sure you don't get stuck with a 17.5:1 box or one made with internal stops made for GM cars.  Lots of rebuilders are very vague with their specs.

I did contact Earl at LARES Tech Support and he said that the LARES 972 does not have the internal stops.
He called it "free turning."

I contacted Nick Alfano at https://www.alfanoperformance.com/contact

and I ordered the original 1971 Hood Decal Set before the tear drop changes were made to them for production reasons.  Nick used a set of original AMC OEM Decals to remake these and he only charges $229 for them.

He is a wealth of AMC knowledge.
He also sells H&M wiring harness, 4 wheel disc brake sets, etc.

I've decided that I'm going to convert my fuel sending unit into an EFI fuel pump using this article.

I already have a new fuel pump off of a 1996 Mustang.  It is a much cheaper option than Edelbrock Universal EFI Sump Fuel Systems 36032 or Holly, etc.

I will post some pics when I get started on this project.
