I hope I have posted this in the right place this time.....Hello.... I am a new member on this forum... I have owned a 1970 AMX for 39 years and attended many shows in the Detroit area over the years.... My car is 100 % stock original.... 390 4 speed.... Glen Green.... I still have the original red top sealed battery in my garage that was put in the car when it left the factory...In my 39 active years of ownership I can say that I have never seen another red cap battery .... It is clean and nice looking but will not hold any charge at all..... I would like to convert this to a gel cell type of battery to give it a new life.... It would look and function real well under the hood..... I have heard of this being done to batteries but have hit all dead ends trying to find someone who does this type of work, preferably in the Detroit area .... Can anyone help me out here ?.... thank you.... mike podrasky

Hey Mike, how ya doin?!
You might talk to Tom Garr on the west side of the state. He is a battery expert and AMC guy. Rick Jones

Hi, Rick.... All is well.... I rejoined the GLCAC recently....I have been keeping my car up real well.... Just upgrading a few parts this year... Rebuilding the clock with a quartz movement... cleaning the tach etc.... I would really like to get a gel cell put inside of this battery.... would you happen to have any contact information on Tom Garr ?... thanks and nice running into you...... mike podrasky

Moved because it's not really restoration, but is of great interest in any case - electrical section should be good.
There's gotta be someone who does that sort of conversion, if nothing else, setting a modern battery in that case with great care. |

(I moved it to Restoration, Bill!) Seemed to me like the right place for it, but let's just go with it! Paul

Very interesting..... NOBODY repairs old batteries like the Pakistanis !.... that was not a sealed battery but maybe a sealed battery can be done like that ?....
AND if I can get mine done with the same type of cells that are in it, I don't HAVE to have it done with gel cells.... but if the battery is apart I might as well use gel cells.... Either way it should last a long time especially if I keep it in the basement in the winter..... thank you..... mike podrasky |

Another method could be to take the red cap off and attach it to a new battery... like a diehard.... AMC battery is white....
OR maybe if a AMC parts seller was to reproduce the red cap and make it so it WILL easily attach to a modern battery ? ?.. I mean they reproduce so many fine parts now... this could be an easy plastic mold.... mp |
