1970 Javelins are fitted with different rocker panel trim and it doesn't seem to be based on whether the car is a base model or SST.  Some have blank polished aluminum trim, while others have the fake sidepipe trim similar to the 1970 AMX (obviously 1 foot longer).  What is the reason for the different rocker panel trim?

Thanks,  Gil

IIRC all early production models used the smooth rocker trim and I believe
that some point around January or so of 1970 that the SST models started being equipped with the simulated exhaust rocker trim. There may have been a TSB or possibly a sales ordering bulletin issued on this change.
Also, I believe there was also a change in the "C" stripe around the same time. I'll take a look at my parts disc and see if there's mention of this in the part numbers or the footnotes.

Thanks George.  Interested in any information you can find regarding the rocker panel trim and the reverse C Stripe.   Gil

The parts disc I have lists the part numbers: 448 7421 for the smooth trim (same p/n for both sides)and 448 6986 right & 448 6987 left for the simulated exhaust style. There are foot notes designating the differences in style but no reference as to when the change was made. If you look at the 1970 AMC Full Line brochure you'll see that the base Javelin was not shown with the rocker molding and the SST was equipped with the smooth style. If you look real close you'll also notice that the SST wore dual painted pinstripes on the front and rear wheel lips. I've seen these pinstripes on only one 1970 Javelin ever. I asked Larry Mitchell about this years ago and he indicated that these stripes were only on early production cars. I believe the brochure car also had the earlier "C" stripe style.
As for the side "C" stripe, the parts manual only shows one style, available in 3 colors, for the entire 1970 model year. There were two different styles of side stripes used on 69 Javelins. A wide, dual wide stripe belt line stripe and later in the year, when the BigBad Colors were introduced, a mid body "C" stripe that ran along the mid body crease line and did a reverse C at the front.

The simulated exhaust rocker trim was introduced mid-year for 69 model Javelins. It was an option. There was a stainless trim standard on SST models. I'm not sure if the 70 models offered the same stainless/ option simulated exhaust trim.

The 69 SST models also got a painted pinstripe on the top belt line. This was deleted if the optional reverse C stripe was ordered. The 69 C stripe is different from the 70 C stripe.

Ross, more good information.  I didn't recall ever seeing the simulated exhaust rocker panel trim on '69 Javelins, but a quick search and I found multiple photos, including what appear to be AMC ads.

Simulated exhaust rocker trim was available on the 1970 Javelins as an option. I think that it may have  been part of the Mod package in 1969-1/2 where they introduced the Hurst shifter, Big Bad colours, roof spoiler, etc. Most of those items became regular production options or fitting for 1970.

Chris, that makes sense.  The '69 Javelin images I found on-line were all Big Bad colors with the roof spoiler.  The AMC ad photos I found are black and white, but the bumpers have the trim piece only found on the Big Bad color-matched bumpers.
