Hello Guys, needing a little insight on removing the dashboard from the AMX. I have removed the windshield from the car and have removed the trim screws around the top by the windshield. I have removed the two bolts, one per side and have unbolted the bracket under the radio pod to the floorboard. Please advise on which steps should be next as I don't want to tear anything up. I appreciate any help I can get on this.

There may also be a short support brace rod connecting the dash to the cowl. At least my 69 has one. It’s on the passenger side near the glove box.

I suggest remove lower steering column cover and there is a metal bracket with 2 support rods going to the firewall. The bracket is bolted to the column. Remove the bolts so the column will drop down to give you more room to slide the assembly back. If you are taking it out as an assembly the wiring will have to be unplugged but take note that there is no junction block like some other makes for the engine wiring. You will find that group with a rubber grommet pushed through the firewall that leads into engine bay for alt. etc. Disconnect those wires and pull them through to inside the car before removal. And like other poster said the heater cables will need to be removed. The controls are mounted with 4 Phillips screws one on each corner.

Of course you’ll need to unplug everything from the back of the dash. The easiest way to do that in to reach up under the dash to the left of the steering column and detach the speedo cable. You can then remove the instrument cluster to gain access to the clock, headlight and wiper switches so you can unplug them. The heater control head is a bit of a pita to unscrew but it’s better to do that than to detach and have to reattach the cables later.
Be sure to protect the steering column paint finish by placing a towel over the columm before rolling the dash down and out. Once the main harness is disconnected you shouldn’t need to push it back through the firewall. Remove the radio pod and be sure to disconnect the battery before proceeding. |

Thank all of you for the help and information. I was able to remove it yesterday. Got the dash, A/C, Heater and wiring out of the car. Few more things and it'll be off to the media blaster.

Javelinjulie, I found that there is a plate with 4 screws that all the wiring was able to go through. I guess you could pull each one through the grommets, but I was able to remove those screws, the plate, and pull the complete harness through to the engine bay and remove it completely.

Yes the the galvanized plate with the holes the grommets go through. I like removing as an assembly since reaching in to unplug can be tricky. Especially since that gauge circuit board is more delicate with the pins to unplug. Although I have done it both ways. Glad it went smoothly for you! While its out remeber check your heater core and evaporator if you have ac. I took mine in had it pressure tested just to be safe while easily accessible.
