So after 50 miles I went to retorque the head bolts today. What a PITA to get at the center two on the drivers side. So my question: Is there a special tool for this? Figured I'd ask before I reinvent the wheel here. BTW I have the 2 barrel carb which is what I think is making this harder than it ought to be. Other than a special tool I don't see how this can be done accurately with the carb in place. Thanks !

I have the 1bbl, and removing the carb to retorque the head bolts looked like the obvious solution....so that's what I did. |

Interesting, I was thinking it was due to the two barrel. I'm getting lazier as I get older so... Jacin

Just another quirk of the 196. Remove the WCD and retorque. You'll be sorry if you don't. Ask me how I know.

I just thought i would point this out. The proper way to re-torque the heads is to loosen each head bolt and re-apply the proper torque to tighten. Starting friction is greater than running friction. Starting friction would screw up your attempt to assure that you have the proper torque. Joe

maybe, but if they're supposed to be 60-65 and they start moving at 50, then I think it's ok to just tighten them, without loosening first.

The head bolts loosen, or they don't. If they don't come loose, retorque isn't needed. In spite of the TSM, the right thing is as squirrel says, set the wrench and pull each.
My most recent engine I found that the six that pass through the trough cover loosened; I assume that the trough cover gasket (,from the Best set) squashed. One seeped coolant. I had to pull the head, replace the gasket. Then I just checked torque on those six every couple days (daily driver) until it stopped changing. Then 3very couple months since (paranoid) but there's been no movement in 6 months so I guess I should stop worrying it. |

The trough cover is also a softer metal than the head, which might contribute to those bolts settling over time. |
