Need a good used 20:1 ratio (5 turns from lock to lock) manual steering box. Its for an original 1969 Scrambler, so I'd like a 69 dated case.

I thought they are 3&1/2 turn lock to lock. I may have a five turn. Are they the same as what AMX &  Javelin would be? give me some numbers and locations and I will look.

The SC/Rambler manual box is 5 turns, 20:1, same as Javelin and AMX, unless the Jav or AMX had the quick ratio 4 turn, 16:1 ratio option. I would think the 16:1 manual would be fairly rare.

Are you still looking for a steering box? I have a late 68 Rambler with manual steering I just bought and am parting out.

I think the Rambler box is 24:1 and 6 turns. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.

I will go check in a little and get back to this thread. I don’t want to mislead anyone.

I just went and tested the box. It’s about 5 1/2 turns lock to lock. Can yank it to almost 6, however I tested my SC/Rambler box which I’m sure is original and that was 5 1/2 lock to lock. When I have some free time during the week I can compare numbers on the two boxes.

I'm still looking for the correct box. Everything I've read say a 20:1 box should be 5 turns from lock to lock. If the box is still on the car, I believe that the front suspension has to have the weight off of it to get an accurate reading.

Actually, the steering box has to be disconnected from the tie rods to get an accurate lock to lock. Otherwise, you are basing lock to lock on where the steering contacts the steering stops on the suspension and not the steering box itself.

The 67-72 AMC part catalog states in the footnotes that the SC/Rambler steering box is "5 1/3 turns lock to lock when disconnected from the steering".

Can you tell me what the parts book lists for a standard 68 Rambler?
