Oh yeah, it needs deeper dish wheels on the back for sure. I haven't decided on what rear to use yet. I originally thought about keeping the 20 with a locker and one piece axles. I guess a 9" ford would be my other choice....

I thought about a 9" to put into my 70 Rebel. I live in Australia and as we have a huge aftermarket support for the Ford 9" I thought it would be a cheaper way to go. Nope. It was cheaper to buy EVERYTHING for the AMC 20, and ship it over from the USA, then it was to buy a 9" center. And then I would still be trying to figure out the mounts.
It looks like I am building a similar car to you. Mine just more street and less race. My budget is $20000, which is basically the cost of a small new car here. So far I am running pretty close, but I have only started. And I plan in retaining stock suspension setup, stock AMC 360, and era correct wheels, so I think your budget is quite reasonable, maybe even on the low side when you consider all the extra little things you have to buy when converting motors etc My plan is basically to keep it stock, but with the modern conviences that technology has brought us. Nice heating and cooling, soundproofing, etc etc. I looked at control freak but decided against it due to the street nature of my build. As far as engine choice goes its your car build it your way. Me personally I would never even look at a Rebel with a Chev in it. I saw a Cuda with a Viper V10 in it so I guess the Jeep motor is doable. You might have to massage the engine bay though. Of course Indy can do a bolt in AMC motor up to about 500 cu in so that would prob be alot easier and cheaper at the end of the day. It sounds like you are really quite good at working in cars. Have you thought about buying a 'running' chassis Corvette, Mustang whatever, and just dropping the shell on top. You really just need the correct wheelbase. Might work out cheaper since you can do fab work yourself. I'd like to try it - they do it with mustangs. Drop the early body over a modern Mustang chassis, retaining all the modern mustang engine, gearbox, suspension etc etc. |

After more thought, I'm staying with the AMC motor. I could see swapping bodies if I wanted to say take an old Stingray and put it on a newer C6 or something like that. That would be very cool. But I think the Control Freak bolt on front and do the same rear as BADJAV390 will get me what I need. Plus, thinking about a fuelie 401 puts a big grin on my face. I do have the pedal set up for a manual tranny that I picked up. What's my best option, and who has done what?

Good call on keeping it AMC!
Will you be building the motor? Nick Alfano from Alfano Performance out of Kenosha has been working on a fuel injection system for AMC's, but I am not sure how far out that will be before its ready. There are several guys here that have put 5 speeds in their cars. I like the keisler stuff as well as the G-force. The keisler set up is probably a more cost effective option and definitely a nice set up. http://www.keislerauto.com/Keisler_Auto/Keisler_Engineering.html Edited by BADJAV390 - Mar/29/2012 at 5:08pm |

All I can say is, beauty, eh! (I'm from Canada). hard to do for 35K thou imo. With that in mind, some other rear ends may be cheaper than a nine inch. An 8.8 furd is plenty strong and way easier to find in wreckers. Another choice might be an 8.75 nopar. Are you wanting to go with a four link and coils? The furd is probabaly easier to set up and comes with discs allready installed in many cases.I'd be tempted to use the G force chassis if the end use included any kind of road course or autocrossing, but I don't know if you'd have to fab a floor?Really looking forward to seeing this one! |

Thanks for the input guys. I won't be building my own engine for this one, but I do have a friend of mine who has done alot of pro street stuff that I have confidence in. I think I will stick with the 20 rear and update it. I was kind of hoping I wouldn't have to mini tub it, but depending on what size meats I put back there, that could change. I'll check out the tranny options over the weekend.... I better fatten up my wallet just so I can thin it back out again...

I like the way you think!!!!!!! Maybe you could have someone build a sheetmetal intake for a real custom look. Maybe a crank trigger would be cool also. I think there are some guys on the forum that could help, maybe.
