I just bought a 1965 Ambassador with a 6 cy engine and auto trans. This car is in amazing condition and drives like new but it wont stay it Park. It pops out.
I cannot identify the transmission, I thought they used Chrysler transmissions, but I have never seen a transmission like this and it is a 2 speed. I took the linkage loose and shifted into Park on the transmission and it still pops out so I have ruled out the linkage. The problem seems to be internal. I suspect the parking pawl. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

You have a Borg Warner transmission. the problem could be anywhere from linkage adjustment to a problem with the transmission. You cannot post pictures unless you have 10 or more points.
First thing to do is buy one of these: and go through the diagnostics section for transmission problems.

As Trader said, it's a Borg Warner automatic. You'll find it is a 3 speed if you shift into D1. D2 is 2nd and 3rd only.

It's an aluminum Borg Warner M35 transmission (or a slight variant, if it is water cooled vs. air cooled). Do get yourself a '65 AMC Technical Service Manual for Ambassador/Classic. It's the best investment you can make for your old car, whether you are working on it yourself, or asking a mechanic to work on it with you. |

The M35 is very supportable and a fine transmission, decent enough by modern standards. Fairly efficient, though non lockup. Parts available,t hey were used in many makes through the 1980's. Air cooled, so make sure it's got the funny bottom cover over the lower part of the bell. THere;s a rear-facing air scoop on it. Simple and effective.
Its probably a throttle-cable trans, and use that TSM to make sure its adjusted right. It's possible to do harm to it with a badly adjusted cable. If the shift points are OK its probably close to OK but no harm in checking it. THere's a nice paragraph in the TSM about the shifter and shifting operation.
