Can someone provide a part number for an oil filter that will fit my '65 American with the 195.6 OHV? This is a one year only filter as it was the first full-flow filter on the 196. This morning when it was in for it's annual state inspection I told them to change the oil. They couldn't locate a filter locally that would fit. The filter housing has a long tube in the center and a short filter won't fit.

It's the FRAM PH 11 or equivalent, like all the other '65+ AMC sixes and eights.

Thanks. I went down to a local NAPA and picked up a Napa Gold 1049 filter.

Can those parts be swapped to older 196 OHV to improve oil filtering?

Farna will have a good answer to that question.
You can't do that swap on a 58-63 American-because there isn't room.

If you want a '65 filter adapter, I have one.

NO -- you can't use the 65 model oil pump on earlier models. There was a change in the block under the oil pump to allow excess volume to go back into the block. That will be open if you put that pump on an earlier block, and pump oil to the ground.

I've never had any issues with the partial flow filter. Several 196s I've pulled apart all had no more bearing wear than later model engines with full flow filters (all were high mileage engines). If you want a full flow filter it can be done though. See http://worldpowersystems.com/AMC/195.6OHV/Oil%20pump%20mods/index.html. It's not a bad idea, if for no other reason than to be able to use a more available filter. The filters the original uses are an industrial engine filter that most stores don't stock, but parts stores that cater to the trucking crowd will have them as they are used on refer trailer engines. If your local store doesn't stock them just have them order a few for you.

Here's how we solved the full flow filter.  I think it looks great and takes up little room.   Note the PCV valve just above the filter.

I don't think that 1049 filter has an anti drain back valve.  At least a PH 11 does. The Purolator equivalent also does and it is a long filter. You probably won't hear it with the solid valve lifters but you could be starving it for oil on start up.

Hmmmmm, interesting,  The builder was lacking on the filter to use.  Any idea what part number I would want in the shorter style?Angry

AC Delco Pf 24 is a short filter with ADV. You may have to go to a GM dealer and they may have to order it.
