Been looking for at positive seals for AMC V8 and would like some opinions.
I have 304 heads going on a 290. About a 1/4 of the guilds are just out of spec, so putting in SBC 11/32" valves and seats with what are equivalent to K-Lines here for the guides, Cheaper then new valve guides/AMC valves, even with moving up to SS valves, larger valve size and new hardened seats. The machine shop does not want to install the liners before machining for positive seals as he states, the more meat the better for installing liners. On that line I found these: At 9/16" ID they are "more meat" then the standard 0.500" and 0.531" ID seals. At 0.718" OD they are only 0.038" larger then the stock guide OD, so single springs and even some double springs should not be an issue. Thoughts? Has anybody used these or have a better option? |

My thoughts are:
Do what your machinist says as far as valve seals go and, there is no reason to replace the AMC valve seats.

Are the stock AMC seats inserts or induction hardened?
I'm assuming your speaking from experience as I see your builds, here and on other Forums. In know the Chebby induction hardened seats are only good to 0.080" or so. Those have to have new inserts if changing valve size. This would be much more cost effective without having to do the seat inserts! I'm just putting in 1.840" and 1.500" valves for the 290, stock bore.

Once again, a AMC engine is not like a chevy... From 1966 and up AMC used higher nickel content in the heads and blocks. They started induction hardening the seats in about 1972. In the 200some AMC heads that we have reworked I can count on one had how many valve seats that we have had to replace and that was because someone screwed up machining them or they were off of a engine for years and water rusted them beyond machining.
