I took out my 1966 rogue out for the first drive today after putting it together. The transmission would not upshift to 3rd, it’s started to rev up high at 40-45 without shifting. I did have the tv cable out because fluid was leaking past the o ring, cleaned the filter and installed new fluid to level. The trans did sit not being used for awhile, I drained the majority of the fluid out the trans when it was out the vehicle. Any info would be helpful.

I'm unclear here -- was this drive with the throttle cable out? That would be a very bad thing and yeah, sure it wouldn't shift right.

If I read it wrong and your just had it out and back in I apologize...

Is fluid level correct? Checked after warmup, parked level, running, and in neutral not park?

I was wondering if the torq converter was full of ATF when driven or after filling to full; the pump moved it into the converter and didn't leave any in the trans?

Exactly. I've found the early BW transmissions to be fine things but very fussy getting fluid level right. Not hard, but it's not like engine oil where you just dump in 5 and go.

After partial drain, add not enough, drive around gently, go through all the gears park level in neutral etc. Add on 8 or 4 oz amounts because overfilling is a PITA.

MY T35 ran great with fluid low on the stick, I'd had crazy problems getting the level right and I and the pro shop thought the stick was wrong. A few weeks later the level cam up! That makes NO SENSE at all. Obviously fluid didnt get larger. Not level? Air pockets? Dunno.

I had the cable connected the whole time I drove it.

Lol. Ok cool. Is it adjusted according to the TSM? Its pretty touchy about thst setting. The linkage, cable, clevis etc can't be too sloppy.

Otherwise it's probably just fluid level. Do it "by the book" repeatedly until it's the same every time.

Mine was so weird, I really thought the trans was failing. A methodical shop I'm Burbank (Walt's Transmissions) figured out correct level independent of the stick (hint: level with the pan gasket or just below,) and they solved it.

I was going through the tsm diagnosis run down or trouble tree. The first things to check are fluid, linkage and governor inspection. The governor would make sense not going into 3rd. On the the transmission there is an inspection cover, I’ll remove it tomorrow but what am I looking for? From the manual looks like you can remove one half of the governor, the other half stays around the output shaft. Another the thing I remember that didn’t cooperate good during assembly was installing the drive shaft, I pounded that yoke back on to the shaft, I tried cleaning it up but it went on hard. Just wondering if that would of jarred the governor?

Jack one wheel up and put trans in neutral when you take the cover off. You can turn the jacked up wheel and will see the top of the governor when it comes by the inspection port. It's obvious. The top of the governor comes off and you just check to make sure it's clean and not sticking inside.

The initial setting of the cable is hard. Make sure the fast idle isn't on, then adjust the cable so that the clevis is a loose pin fit. Then lengthen the cable three turns. After that drive it. If it shifts too slow lengthen cable, if too fast shorten. You can shorten about half a turn, I wouldn't go more than that. You can lengthen up to 1.5, maybe 2 turns. the cable acts as a kick-down also. It pushes in as throttle is increased. If it's too long you'll find the trans kicking down early, like when you're trying to hold speed going up a hill. a half turn makes a difference.

One more thing on the cable. It should move easily! Hold it the clevis between the tip of your thumb and one finger while it's disconnected from the throttle linkage. It should push in easily. If it's hard to move the cable needs cleaning and lubricating. Cable needs to come off and be soaked in a 50/50 ATF/acetone mix coiled in a bucket. The plastic covering may come off, but that's not a terrible thing. You can either push a piece of tubing over it or leave it bare. You can just spray the coiled wire covering with penetrating oil once a year and it will stay free.

I removed the governor and it seemed to move good (not stick). I’ll still take it apart and clean it. The cable moves good and is adjusted tight. The next step is remove the pan” check valve body attaching bolts” as the manual says. I’ll make sure that tv cable didn’t break and is moving the valve properly.

Hey Frank,

How much play should that cable have? I'm having issues with shifting no matter what drive is selected.

Thanks,
Scott
