I’m getting ready to replace my windshield rubber seal due to the old one leaking. I have a 1964 Rambler Classic wagon and the seal has the trim in it. What is the easiest way to remove the windshield and when installing it does the seal have to be glued in as well? Are there any instructions or videos showing the process? Thanks for any information.

The method for installing the windshield and it's gasket is described in detail in the tech service manual. It involves placement of string, etc.
There is an dditional difference in some years, an extra flap of rubber inside along the bottom to close off the gap in front of the instrument panel. Couldn't tell you which is which. They should be the same otherwise. Ask one of the vendors (Galvins, etc) about it. I'm sure it is the same as some other years not not sure which. THe install process is straightforward, and if you hadn't done it before, without the TSM you'd probably never guess it. |

Okay that sounds good. I’ll get a TSM and go from there. I got the gasket from Galvin’s so I’ll see what they have to say. Thanks for the information

Removal was not too bad, I did it myself. For reinstall you must use a sealant at the top and bottom of punch welds. It is spelled out in the TSM.
If you have the chrome trim insert, it is installed before you mount rubber gasket on the windshield. I had a long time glass buddy help me with the reinstall, well actually I helped him and asked needless questions. He does a lot of vintage cars of the side and he used the rope/string method to pull the gasket over the pinch welds. The sealant on my 64’s origional windshield from the factory had the sealant and it was still pliable. He had the same type of goo in the tube. Says it is a must. Hint: if there are headliner issues a,es removal out of the car a whole lot easier with those 2 fiberglass pieces. Ron.

I have used the string method (actually cord) with good results. A tool from Lowe’s for removing vinyl siding helps to get ahold of the rubber edge if there is a spot that doesn’t go as planned.

Thanks for the info, I’ll definitely give that tool a thought if I run into trouble. Have you used any type of glue when installing the windshield?

I wouldn’t consider adhesive. Someday it might need to be removed, and the limited number of replacement windshields in the market if you have to cut it out would give me pause.

Rubber gasket and the TSM spells out you set a bead on the upper channel windshield pinch weld and the lower channel pinchweld.
