What is the best paint for a steering wheel? I am changing the color to tan (Original)) to match the interior.

I used SEM paint with a degreaser and an adhesion promoter and then covered it with a semi-gloss 2K clearcoat and mine came out great. Mine was originally charcoal and I painted it to match my ‘69 AMX saddle tan interior. Edited by sweatlock - Oct/22/2021 at 11:36am |

For the do-it-yourself, SEM is most likely the product of choice by most folks. In a professional shop environment, most professional paint products will do the same job. But you would need to use certain chemical additives for a satin or flat color appearance.
Regardless of what product you use, once a part is painted, be aware that using the steering wheel will eventually wear the paint out or thin over time. I painted my 70 Javelin Steering wheel and added a steering wheel leather grip for just that reason. My hands are always on the leather grip instead of the painted surface of the steering wheel.

Sweatlock-Your interior looks like it turned out really well. 68AMXJoe-If you go with the SEM products or not, please post pictures showing how your interior turns out. I had a red gut in my 68 AMX, still in the process of converting it to black and my steering well needs paint as well.

SEM Color Coat is a good choice for most interior plastics, though I feel that it doesn't adhere as well as it did a few years ago. I'm suspecting that they've changed the formula, perhaps in an effort to remove solvents. Fortunately, SEM makes a product called Sand Free Adhesion Promoter that makes all the difference if you use it before applying paint. I had trouble getting the SEM to adhere to my repop console lid until I used that product. The SEM vinyl prep product alone didn't seem to help.
As for the wood grain on the steering wheel rim, I used Minwax gel stain. It's made for fiberglass and materials like plastic where the stain can't soak in as it does on wood. I mixed a couple colors together to get the color I wanted. Slow drying as I recall but it turned out really nice. I think I finished it off with a spray coat of clear, but don't remember exactly. If you've repaired a crack on the rim you can use a heavy grit sandpaper to recreate the lines in the wood prior to painting.

You need to have 30 posts before you can post Pics or list items for sale - Looks like you are at 28 now so just a couple more should do it. Once you can post, it is still pretty painful
