Where would one find a replacement gasket/seal for the lid of the master cylinder
for a '72 Javelin with manual disc/drum brakes? Mine is looking kinda shabby, and seeps a bit at the front after driving... Really don't want to have to buy a whole new master cylinder just to get the gasket!! But I'll be darned if I can find a source for just the gasket!! Mac.

AMARK has them for $9
Says for power, but I don’t think there’s a difference between the master cylinder for power disc brakes and manual.

Fantastic!! Thank you!!
I can't believe in all the searching I did, AMARK never came up!! I did find a lot of results for Ford gaskets that look strikingly similar, but no way to know if they'd fit properly!! Wonder how much shipping a $9 part to Canada will cost? I'm betting 3 times the cost of the part!!

Or find some gasket material, and cut your own. Make a pattern with writing paper etc. Cut carefully. I'm making more and more gaskets myself, it's simply more convenient and works great. I have three or four thicknesses held to a metal cabinet with a magnet so they're flat. Karropak works for most things. I special ordered some thin stuff for oil pumps etc.

Probably want to stick with the factory style with the bellows rather than make a flat one. My understanding is the bellows gets sucked in as the brakes wear (and liquid level goes down) so you don't inhale outside air that may contain moisture. Never really thought about what would happen if the bellows didn't make up for the lost volume of brake fluid?
You might be able to find a cheapo chrome cover locally and just use the gasket? In the US, Dorman Help products are fairly common. I have seen master cylinder cover gaskets on the HELP displays but AMC could be a challenge?

Oh good point on the bellows.
My older cars don't have 'em, I forgot. But if the bellows have rotted away or something it may be that the master cyl is ancient and needs a close look. |

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!!
I had thought about the cheapie chrome cover angle, but they don't seem to include the gasket/bellows!! After some exhaustive research and a great eBay listing with some measurements, it seems like early 70's-80's Ford master cylinders use the exact same part!! So it looks like Dorman #42069 "Help" part should be an exact match!! Easy to find locally or on Amazon... Or on my next Rock Auto order.... There's even a review from an Amazon buyer that said it worked for his '69 AMC!! I'll give one a try!! But the car is now in winter storage... I'll try to remember to update in 7 months when I get to see my car again!! |
