Hi every one, I'm making this thread to try a d prepare for the work I want to do on my rambler, it's has major rust issues that I will over time address.
I'm posting this pic, this is the best pic I could take, it is the area underneath the edge of the body, right underneath the floor of the driver's side of the rambler, close to the edge... you can see the front driver's side wheel well in the edge of the pic just infront of my beard, (been growing it for more then nine months and haven't cut not one hair!) which is the biggest concern I have and am hoping the members of the forum who are most knowledgeable about these types of work can give me some advice to get these big jobs done! (After I break in the engine and ect) Thanks alot for your time! 1958 AMC Rambler Super pt.44 on youtube Edited by 1958 rambler super - Mar/24/2022 at 4:42pm |

It looks fixable. Do you have a mig welder. Do you have experience welding? The outer section will need to be cut out and then you can repair the pieces inside. These don't look like complex shapes to form but it will be a bit tricky to weld given the location. It definitely looks structural so you will need to do your best to support the frame before you start cutting.

Ok, I have a flux core welder that I bot for the repairs, it is a mig welder that doesn't need gas and I have done a whole bunch of mig welding in highschool so I'm alittle familiar with it.
When you say the outer section will need to be cut out then you can repair the pieces inside, are you talking about the outer section being the thick metal piece and the inner piece being the floor? How would you support this? With blocks of wood on either side that are contacting both the ground and the body of the rambler? |

My first car in 1967 was a 58 Rambler Super. My great uncle gave it to me and it was really rusty. After 6 month of driving it the transmission crossmember separated from the car on the right side. That was the death of the car, I remember exactly where I buried it.

Was it the death of the car because something happened to the transmission when the cross member fell down? Where did you bury it? (If I can ask)

The crossmember dropped close to scraping on the road. There wasn’t enough good metal left to patch it without major fabrication. The car was free and I got 6 months out of it. There used to be a sand pit in Phelps, NY and it was being backfilled as a local dump. Back then every town had a couple of local free landfills. There is a 57 Ford there, too.

Ohhhh man!!!! The ramblers buried in a sand pit?! Rest in piece!
This rambler is starting to burn me out, I'm getting really frustrated, this morning I went to the fitting store to buy a new compression fitting for the tiny oil pressure tube, the guy at the store was going to sell me the whole bit but I said no I only need this part here, when I got back to my house the new fitting had a shallower depth the tube stops at, so I couldn't use the other fitting that compresses onto the tube when both other fittings are threaded onto to each other.... And I got so mad!!! I have to go all the way back there on two buses and walking ect goddam.... I threw the fitting I couldn't use and stomped the crap of the bumper.... I been working real hard since December and im getting burnt out and wanna sell the rambler and just it out of my life, but only on bad days, but I been having more and more bad days lately.... |

Cut back on the coffee & get more exercise, stay focused on your task. If it was easy the previous owner would have fixed the problems.

*sigh* sometimes when I go over every single thing I've replaced, repaired, or worked on or established an understanding of something, I can see how much stuff I've accomplished, and it's a LOT. There's alot of hours, lots of hours I've worked on this car, and I think if I let go of it it'll be a pretty big waste, and I'd regret it for sure. But stuff like losing my temper this morning, I hope that's as bad as it will get, because that's ugly stuff, I hope none of my neighbors saw that.
But I'll take your advice very seriously PAGAENT, and I hope it'll help. But your definitely right, if it was an easy thing to do the prev owner would have done it. I wish I could go back in time and ask him more questions about what things he experienced while driving the rambler.

Getting frustrated at times is part of the hobby. I can't count the number of times I've sworn I'm selling everything I have and going into woodworking or pottery.....and after a couple months of heal-up time I'm ready to go for it again, full speed.
