The hood springs and hinges on my '73 don't quite open simultaneously.  One of them lags behind the other when opening the hood, and it puts a little stress on one corner of the hood in the process.  I've tried lubricating the hinges, but it hasn't made any difference.  What should I be looking for?  I don't see any obvious visible differences between the two sides.

Thirty weight motor oil always worked for me.  Granted, I had to reapply it a few times while working the hood and hinge up and down many times.  Tape a folded newspaper under the hinge to catch the drips.

I think I'm having a similar problem with both hinges. I was wondering do the hinge assemblies cause the hood to "pop" open when you actuate the hood release or is there supposed to be a separate spring on the core support or hood?

The hood is not supposed to "pop" open. The hinge mechanism has an "over/under" mid position that is approximately half way open.
With the hood about a foot from the closed position, you should be able to drop the hood and have it latch completely. You should not have to push on the hood to have it latch closed.
Maintenance is the key, lack of lubrication and corrosion are the usual culprits for a hinge to not work correctly.

My problem is if I pull on the hood release it won't open unless it's assisted upwards. The latching mechanism seems to work, it's just the hood doesn't open if that makes any sense.

I have the additional issue that someone painted my hinges I suspect. Is there an adjustment in the hinges that may be off?

There is a spring on the rad support which pushes up on the hood. This is what causes the hood to pop up when the latch is released.

There are two latches: the main latch an the safety. The safety is the one you have to release manually after the hood pops. If either of the two latches are mis-adjusted and binding against the striker, the hood won't pop properly.

@Camjam:
It's possible there is half a century of dirt in the pivot point of the sticky hinge, which simple lubrication won't dislodge. Ideally, you would want to remove the hinges and soak them in a solvent bath. Barring that, spray the pivot points with a solvent such as BrakeClean.

Either way, be sure to re-lubricate afterwards.
