With these heads using the 440 spacing for the exhaust what have people used for headers that fit the engine compartment of a 68 AMX. Is there a Dodge body type that will fit the AMC engine bay with little modifications?
Thank you for your help. Greg |

Just searching a Duster for header fitment as the engine compartment would be close to an AMX, most Mopar sites go to Schumacher's for the best fitment and performance. But different engine and accessories may make this outright a bad idea.
The unknown would be the ARH (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/amh-s00459/make/dodge). But Nick at ARH posts on this site and he may be able to confirm from the drawings if the ARH will fit or not. They also make headers for the 68 AMX. For the price of the headers, PO would expect that he would be able to provide you a reasonable idea if they would fit. Good luck, sounds awesome!

If your using this head and plan to run them in any AMC car you're on your own in building headers.

I thought I may need to go this route and build a custom set. Summit sells different pipe diameter header weld up kits that come with the flanges for the 440. I will look at buying their kit as a starting point.

You would build the headers yourself or pay someone to custom build them for you. Start off with some nice water jetted flanges that fit correctly after being stubbed up with the appropriate size tube. Go from there with a box of bends and some nice collectors. After all tacked together for fit and clearance tig weld. Personally I would use stainless and ditch the mild steel and coatings. the other option would to be maybe sweet talk AHR to modify their headers with a 440 flange and appropriate bends. The main problem with even thinking about this is that with those heads you should be wanting header tubes a lot bigger than 1-7/8". Think 2-1/8" as a start and go up from there according to your build.

If you are not building a race motor don't get the CNC300 heads buy the smaller version. The CNC300 heads require a larger bore than a stock block can generally provide.

I already have the Indy package and I have purchased everything but the cam, lifters and timing gear. I have had the crank machined for the chevy rods and I have just got the crank back from balancing. I am going to do a cc on a cylinder to confirm compression ratio prior to having a discussion on the best cam for it. I may send out the heads for flowing and clean up and I was going to speak to John (JCIS) on them once I know what compression I am working with.I purchased a complete part package from a guy in B.C. that included 3x 401 engines.I first purchased a turn key eddy engine from him and then I purchased all of his AMC parts from him which included the entire Indy package.

Yes, it is good Iam retired now so I have time to work on the 3 cars. I got a really good price on the Indy package and paid 1/3 less than I paid for the eddy engine. Everything that I purchased were brand new.

I am looking at using the Milodon gear drive on this build. Reviewing other threads on this topic either people have had bad experiences and hate them or people love them. I have run the RCD gear drive on my race car for 20 years and it was a beautiful technology that never failed me and it allowed quick timing changes but engineered just to remove the cam driven fuel pump to make changes. RCD do not make the gear drive for AMC.
It was stated that the factor timing cover would have to be modified to fit and the Indy cover just needs minor massaging to fit. Could I have members chime in who are using it with the Indy cover to provide details on what massaging have to take place and did everyone add an additional lub line in the cover to assist lubrication? Has anyone had problems with them after fitting and running them. The RCD ones I ran in the past had the option of purchaising a -.010 crank gear to compensate any line boring that brought the crank centerline closer to the cam. Is there adjustment to correct gear clearance on the Milodon gear drive? |
