All the speedo cables that I pulled weather it be AMC GM Ford Chrysler Saab WV if they are original had to come out from the top (speedo head) there is a stop sleeve crimped on the upper part of the cable to prevent the cable walking in the speedometer unit.

Made this mistake before, are we talking the complete cable or just the inner wire to remove for maintenance? The inner wire has nothing on it but crimped square at each end.
The foam roll in the firewall hole has to be removed to replace the complete cable. The hole in the fire wall is big enough to fit the speedometer sheath nut, so the cable can be pulled out either way.
If replacing the complete cable, your likely pulling out the speedometer to access the attaching nut and pulling the cable through from the dash is easier.
You still have to raise the rear to prevent transmission fluid from draining when you disconnect the cable from the transmission.

the cable's doing the typical weird stuff, like bouncing around.  so, i thought i'd simply pull out the inner wire, degrease, and relube.

this afternoon was "lube the cable" day.  note:  can't pull the cable (at least mine)
from the tranny end.  goodtimes caught it--the crimped sleeve prevents it (assuming
my cable/housing is an amc product).  i loosened up the cable nut from the speedo and
pulled the cable out.  didn't appear to be in bad shape.  sent some carb cleaner through
the housing and lightly lubed up the cable.  everything went back together easy peazy
until i started the engine (car was on jack stands) and put it in gear. the speedo is still
reading 18 mph at the start and won't go back to zero.  my feeling is that the head
unit is bad? argggh!

Last couple of cables I ordered from NAPA over a decade ago and both did not have that sleeve.
Makes sense to locate the cable as the NAPA ones would just move to the transmission over time you would think, no place to go beyond the gear mind you.
Oh well, mine still works - knock on wood.

Does the speedo read 18mph with the ignition off, or trans in park? If so, that's a problem with the speedometer itself, not the cable.

you're correct, bb69.  the speedo reads 18 mph w/the ignition off.
i could advertise for a good used one.  there is a speedo repair shop
not too far from where i live. i imagine it might cost more to repair
than to buy a used unit.

decided to get it repaired, instead of a potentially scratched up, non-tested
speedo.  and, costs less to repair than to buy!  about $172 to repair.
turnaround is only 3-4 days.

the guy asked me if the movement was jeweled or had magnets....guessing
that there are magnets in the head.
