Pull the distributor out of the engine, upload photos of both gears, new timing sets, do not "jump a tooth".

Hello everyone! Turns out it was indeed electrical related; did some poking into the dizzy based on the link TroutWilly posted and noticed that the central terminal looked like it had been arcing. Re-bent the central tab on the rotor so it was more elevated, and a little electronic parts cleaner and a shop towel later, I got the engine back together. Had to fiddle with the idle set screw on the Holley, but the 360 starts quite happily once again! Noticed that my alternator isn't charging, alt light on the dash is on and the volt meter is only reading 12 volts or so, but that's another riddle for another day. So happy to hear the Jav roar to life and the engine idling properly once again! Apologies to everyone for bringing you all down the rabbit hole with me. Of course it's the one *little* thing that I overlooked that turned out to be the problem. Looking forward to fixing the charging issue, getting the engine tuned and getting her on the road. Thanks to everyone for your patience! Cheers! -Brad L.

No apologies needed. Its what this is all about. Just look at all the other possibilities that were brought up. We're all smarter for it. For my first thirty years with my AMX I mostly ran an Axcel dual point distributor without any problems. Then my troubles with the center electrode began when I switched to a Mallory. Ever since then I always check the cap (I actually try not to even remove it anymore). Glad its fixed. Now, what's next?

That’s crazy that that’s what caused backfiring though the carburetor, I’ve worked on cars for decades and never seen this. Amazing. So I’ve also learned something new to file away for future reference.
