I have a 1974 Javelin with an open diff and I want to know what's the cheapest and easiest way to upgrade it to a limited slip diff, anyone know?

Lunch box, but it is not all that good. If you are intent on cheap and easy. Get a complete rear if locally available. If not you will need to properly shim and transfer ring over to the swap out carrier.

The rear should be an AMC20 (perfectly round cover w/12 bolts). It is the same as used in Jeeps between 76 and 86. Look at something like the Aussie Locker, Lock-Right, or Detroit EZ Locker. All can be had for around $300 and just replace the spider and side gears in the existing diff, so no gear set-up is required. They do make noise, and require some getting used to while driving. Any of the other replacement carriers will run $500+ and require backlash to be re-set during installation. Unless you're changing gear ratios, then a full setup is required.

Check the condition of your existing carrier before buying one of the smaller lockers as it's not uncommon for them to be flogged out, in which case you are better off buying a full centre.

You should be able to find plenty of info when you do a websearch for 'Jeep AMC 20 lunchbox locker install'.

Because of all the interest and influence through Jeep, there's a lot of choices to make.

I traded a York compressor for a Jeep CJ Model 20 with a Trac Loc carrier. I just got around to swapping it into my Javelin Model 20 this weekend. I swapped my 2.87 ring gear over and had to setup backlash again when I swapped it in. I haven't driven it yet and don't know how worn the clutches may be. But I'm ordering all new bearings and seals soon and will be rebuilding the entire rear end and Trac Loc and setting it all up again. I didn't pull the pinion gear when I put this carrier in since I wasn't replacing bearings yet.

Keep a look out for a Model 20 with a posi or locker from a Jeep as they get swapped for heavier duty rear ends all the time. Otherwise, I'm partial to Powertrax lockers. They're a little more expensive than the Lock-Right made by the same company, but operate more quietly and smoothly. I've run them in more than one vehicle. They're fun once you're used to them.

If you're looking for factory limited slips,
keep in mind that earlier factory limited slips were stronger & more effective 2-piece case Powr-Lok diffs.
Sometime in 1971/72 they switched over to less expensive 1 - piece case Track-Loks.

Do a search to see what the differences are,
but IMHO it's worth the extra effort/expense to try to track down the earlier style if possible.

Tru-Tracks were not factory installed in AMCs,
but are also a very good/durable limited slip option that's often available used.
They also don't require using a friction modifier additive like factory style clutch type LSDs do.

Jeep message boards are a good place to find stuff like this used,
if there's Jeep guys in your area sign up for a local board and you might be surprised what's out there and dirt cheap Smile

Are you wanting a locker or limited slip?

Lockers act like a spool when locked and like an open differential when not locked. Great for off-road or track use when you understand the behaviour and are off the throttle on turns. On-road with part throttle operation may lock when turning, so may need to adjust driving style to suit.

Limited slip use clutches or gears (Truetrack) to give more progressive control so not the on/off behaviour of a locker and generally more street friendly, depending on driving style.

Cheapest and simplest is to find something used or a close fit swap from another car. Ford 8.8s seem to be popular ... but not sure of a direct fit without some rework?

Hope this helps,RD
