Hello all,
I am wondering what would be the best/strongest twin grip carrier to use?
Here's the deal I have a 68 Rebel that needs a twin grip. It's a south Carolina car so the housing is mint but no twin grip.
So I'm headed to the junkyard but I have all these questions.
What's the best ?
What about some Jeep stuff? That would be easier to find and if it was stronger I'll take it.
Are they all interchangeable?
Trac-loc?
Keep in mind once I find it I will completely rebuild it.
Thanks guys

For oem the 2 piece is best. But if you want the best Torson Gleason all the way up to 500hp (wear and tear rebuild needed). For serious hp a true locker or spool.

Factory, definitely the 2 piece carrier twin grip (Dana Power-Lock).  It was only used until about 1972.  After that they went with the Dana Track-Lock, which had a 1 piece carrier (still called a twin grip).  The Track-Lock wasn't known for it's longevity, most were useless after 20-30K miles.  All Jeep CJs used the Track-Lock in the Dana 20 (76-86), pretty sure the Wagoneers did too.

If you go aftermarket, the Detroit Soft-Locker is bullet proof, but is noisy and can cause some odd pull on accel/decel.  The Gleason Torsen hasn't been sold under that name since the early 80s.  Detroit bought the design and sells it as the TruTrack.

If you have the budget go with a Truetrac as they are an all gear driven posi and far superior to a typical posi unit that has clutches that wear out. Also a Truetrac is a unit that has great street manners compared to a Detroit Locker which is almost a spool on the street the way they work.

Top picture is a detroit locker and a power grip. power grip is factory 71 and earlier. second picture is a 72 and newer twin grip, probably all you might find in a junk yard, cheap easy to rebuild. most say they do not last. last picture is a gleason and a truetrac

X2. I have one in my 9" and it's the nicest limited slip unit I've ever used.

Ok so I've read all about identifying rear ends by crawling  under the car but as you all know that's not so easy in a junk yard with these older cars in the weeds or on top of each other. How about the vin number or another way?

Most AMC cars with a "twin grip" had a sticker on the passenger side wheel well inside the trunk.  But after 50 years it's doubtful they're still there.  No other way except the codes stamped on the housing.

I picked up a late 60s power grip ( Twin grip) so I think I'm on the right track. I would like to thank everyone for their help.
