Hey everyone -

First post.  I am building an AMC 401 that I picked up for $600 out of a 1973 International Travelall. I'm installing it in my '76 "Levi's Edition" Jeep CJ Renegade that is all original and has 40,000 miles.  (304 V-8 with a T-18 4-speed manual - the 304 froze up.)  I just got the shortblock back together and all of the specs were perfect.  My question is in regards to the camshaft gear / fuel pump eccentric / distributor drive gear assembly.    Unfortunately, I can't post a picture due to the forum rules as a new member but my engine came with a large dished washer that looks like a oil slinger in addition to the camshaft gear / fuel pump eccentric / distributor drive gear.  I did not take a picture when I took it apart and need to know where this large oil slinger goes in the assembly.  Which direction does the dished part face?   (I assume it fits towards the front of the engine.) I have a factory AMC / Jeep repair manual from 1976 and mistakenly thought it would have a diagram in it but it does not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Clarification.....the oil slinger washer goes on the crankshaft stub, not the camshaft assembly.  Does if go between the crankshaft and the harmonic balancer with the dished part facing forward?

Nevermind.....I found the diagram in the factory repair manual.  Sorry for the silly post.

Really check your oil passages through the timing set and gears, to ensure proper oiling to the distributor gears

Yes....I read about that.  All of the openings line up properly for oil flow.  The chamfered opening in the new camshaft gear seems a bit smaller than the factory gearset.  I have seen that some people enlarge that passage a little bit to encourage more oil flow to the distributor gear.  I might consider doing that. I'll try to post some pics of the build tomorrow off of my Shutterfly account.

I would strongly consider this.

Here's a few pictures of the build so far.  I'm picking up the cylinder heads this next week from the machine shop.

Here's a picture of the Jeep the engine is going in to:

Yeah, the forum instructions on how to post pictures are not exactly helpful.   I spent over two hours trying to figure it out to no avail.  Sorry.

You do know that the 401 uses a different flywheel than the 304?
