    Posted: Mar/24/2021 at 4:26pm

The goal I am setting for this summer (2021/Updated to 2023) is to get my 1970 Javelin running again. This car was built in December of 1970 and came from the factory in Big Bad Green with a 304 automatic. Since acquiring the car in 1994, I have always felt this was a car I could afford to modify and put after market parts on without hurting it's collectable value. The 401 CID engine was built about fifteen years ago by Total Performance in Santee, California. 401 with Ross .030 over forged pistons, Romec balancer, Rollmaster timing Chain, Edelbrock Aluminum Heads, Edelbrock Air Gap Intake Manifold, Canton Oil Pan, Schneider Cam all connected to a 727 Transmission with a higher than stock stall converter from Dalenzi, local company, they always paint their converters purple. The carb is an Edelbrock 750 cfm with a Holley Blue/110 gph electric fuel pump back by the stock gas tank. I never opened the rear end, but it used to spin both wheels and it has traction bars. I ran out of money back in the day and cheeped out on the headers, I should have bought a pair of the Edelbrock shorty headers but instead the engine builder, who also installed the engine for me, ground down a couple of places on the heads to clear the used Headman headers I had coated. There is a used timing cover on the engine that I thought was pretty good at the time, but now I see it needs to be replaced. The water pump is stock and the radiator was re-cored as a three row, if I remember. I found a local company here in San Diego that made quick ratio power steering boxes with polished/chrome covers. Using a later GM power steering pump was an improvement over the earlier Eaton, so I was happy about that. Centerline 17" Mojave wheels were made with a rotary billet process that was a new thing at the time. Low price tires are 235 wide and have almost zero miles on them, Discount Tire a few years back, they should still be good. Fiberglass bumpers and spoilers.

So here is what I am digging out of the AMC parts shed or buying from Speedway Motors/Summit Racing/Jeg's this spring.

Fuel: I bought one of these new Edelbrock AVS/2 carburetor and may have over done it with the CFM. They seem to jump from 650 to 800. I was really looking for another 750, I have two already that need to be rebuilt, any suggestions on where I can mail them for rebuilding? Price$? Anyway, I went with the 800cfm, which might be a bit much for this engine, we'll see. Electric choke and a fuel line kit that I would like to mount on the driver's side of the carburetor, since the factory fuel hard line runs up to the driver's side of the engine compartment, I figure, why cross over the hot engine with the fuel. Anyone have experience moving the fuel inlet from the passenger's side to the driver's side of the carb? The Holley Blue does not seem very loud and the little fuel pressure gauge near the carb reads zero with the pump on, so I bought a rebuild kit. I will also drop the factory gas tank and drain it, maybe even a coating inside, we'll see. Coating recommendations?

Cooling: http://www.amx390.com/Videos/mezieredvd.wmv I made a video for the Meziere family a few years back and now I would like to finally use their electric water pump. I am planning on changing the power steering gearbox to a manual one, if I have to. I never figured out how to use their pump with the stock power steering bracket. There might be a way to make a new bracket off the intake, I'll give it some thought. But if I have to change the steering gearbox I will, I have one in the shed. By the way, last summer's project was to build the 10' X 12 ' shed to organize AMC parts, so I could work on the car this year. The Meziere system uses a block off plate on the front of the timing chain cover with the pump mounted to the plate. The pump was originally made for a Ford small block, but it fits AMC too. I found a really cool radiator cap I probably bought at an AMO show or Kenosha homecoming that has the early AM script on it. This is my style, oh yea! I hope it fits on these aftermarket radiators. Fingers crossed.

I dug out the shroud with dual electric fans and temperature controller from SPAL that I bought years ago and squirrled away in the attic of the garage. I don't do Evil-Bay anymore, so I am looking at Jeg's for the Champion 4 row P/N 166-MC407 for $302. I have also been looking at Speedway Motors for the Frostbite 4 row radiator #FB240 made by Holley for $408. Any suggestions between the two?

I am also considering buying the Bulltear Ultimate timing cover kit instead of putting another used timing cover on, I have plenty of used ones in the AMC shed. For $586 this seems like a pretty cool upgrade, nickel plated, yess. I do have some questions I am hoping to answer here later..

Q1    Is it a Crown timing cover? Yes, I think so, but reworked.

Q2    What oil filters are used? I am going with K&N HP-3001

Q3    Use Hi-Temp RTV on gaskets or dry? I am going with Permatex Ultra Black

Q4    Does it include the front main seal behind balancer? Yes

Exhaust: Since Edelbrock does not make the shorty headers any more, I ordered the very similar Patriot headers, P/N H8600-1 metallic ceramic coated from Speedway, they had the best price of the three vendors by a few dollars.$468. We'll see how long it takes for them to get here, ordered through Speedway, but shipped by manufacturer.  I have an old package of new Stage 8 locking header bolts and I am planning on buying the Remflex exhaust gaskets P/N 1001 for the dog-leg head. I can order them from Summit for $36.31 a pair. I see there is also a P/N 1003 for "Weld Bead" headers, not sure about that one.  I am budgeting $500 for my local exhaust shop "RPM-Richard's Performance Muffler" to make my existing exhaust connect to the shorter headers. I am going to also ask him to make the exhaust tips level. Scotty's in Leucadia, CA, who originally built the exhaust system, thought pointing the exhaust tips down a few degrees looked cool. At the time, I just wanted to pick my car up and did not want to wait for them to change it, they said they would if I wanted. I should have had them do it then. Live and learn.

Tom

PS And we'll see what else breaks or falls off that needs love.

Here's what the engine looks like now. I forgot the cam specs, but it's pretty big for an automatic.

If I can get it running right, it should make more than 400 HP.

The fuel system was modified several times over the years, a hodge podge of monkeyisms. Feel free to show off images of how to do it properly. I would love to see some good fuel lines to the carburator.

The old Milodon valve covers are severely rusted, so I cleaned up some used Edelbrock valve covers to replace them. New Edelbrock Signature covers are only $60, but I am trying to save money.
I am considering using four breathers by drilling holes in the Edelbrock covers. The Milodon are no longer available, maybe I will have them rechromed or powder coated.

With the valve cover off, the Edelbrock aluminum head and valve train still looks pretty clean.

It will look better with the Edelbrock valve covers.

It was raining yesterday and working in a 10' X 20' tent on concrete came in handy.
Fuel tank didn't have much fuel in it thankfully.

I am going to try rebuilding the Holley "blue" fuel pump/110 GPH with the rebuild kit. I may end up buying a new one for $163 we'll see.

I drove to the local Napa to get some 3/8" fuel line and saw this AMX parked at the alignment shop.

A friend showed up to give me an update on the headers.
Speedway Motors was expecting the manufacturer to ship the headers, but it has been a week already and the manufacturer website says they are out of stock.
Summit Racing shows them in stock, I sent them a message to confirm they have them.

Good to hear from you Steve, thanks for the comment. How's your Javelin coming along? We should get together this summer for Cruzin Grand.
