A common issue related to normal wear. Most likely a small adjustment of the switch position will fix the issue. GM models used the same basic switch that's why they're readily available.

If I recall correctly there is a procedure for adjusting the switch in the TSM. They do go out of adjustment, I lost a point for my reverse light not working at a concours due to the switch. You won't gain that point back at that level of show. Removed the console and adjusted the switch as soon as I got home.

I'm in the middle of trying to center my neutral safety switch and have run into some issues.
1. First the car would no longer start in Park which led me to my original post. 2. I loosened the 2 screws holding the switch and inserted a pin to center the switch. 3. Car then would start in every position except Park. 4. Took the switch out without removing wires and have attached a photo. 5. How does the nylon portion under the switch insert into the metal receiver on shifter? 6. Does the center of the nylon fit over one of the tabs on the metal receiver or does the entire nylon push into the center of the metal receiver? 6. Now, when I re-install the switch the car will not start in any position. Have no idea what happened.

Yes, the switch does go out in park but still work in neutral. Yes, adjusting some times works but more often then not the switch is going bad. The plastic tab at the bottom of the switch has to going in the metal prongs on the shifter in the right side of your picture. This in the neutral position where the switch has to be set . The small adjustment hole gets if I recall correctly some thing like a 3/32 punch or a small nail inserted . After the switch is bolted done remove the nail or what ever you use. This should be in your service manual. If you don't have one ,get one. Easy enough off EBAY or any of the major AMC parts vendors as they been reprinted. LRDaum

Used my TSM to get this far, but now the car won't start in any position. Im guessing the switch just pushes into the shifter receiver. A tight fit I'm guessing? It may be time to order a new safety switch.

The lever that moves the switch on those shifters tends to be sloppy, it's a poor design. It could be slipping on the shaft or binding at the switch. -Steve- |

Haven't noticed any slop in the shift lever mechanism. I'll try again tomorrow to see if I can get it working again, but I think I'll order a new switch just in case.

9T68AMX - consider maybe ever so gently squezzing together ever so slightly the "tangs" on your floor shifter that "grab" that white plastic "tang" on your Neutral Safety Switch... the shifter "tangs" can get a little splayed causing slop and improper function of the NSS...
Imagine in 50+ years the number of cycles that poor thing has seen... But first maybe please, measure the existing gap between the tangs and the width of the white plastic tab on the NSS, and post up the measurements... Peace

I'll measure the parts tomorrow and post the measurements here. Tomorrow I'll attempt to make this nss work again, but I have a feeling I need to purchase a new switch.
