My car came with threadbare tires and rusty wheels.  I bought what looked like a nice set of good tires mounted on American Racing faux wire wheels, from a Craigslist ad, for a good price.
Thinking I might "dress up" my '59 Super with those wheels, I regret losing the original look and now want to find a set of 15" stock wheels so I can use the full sized hub caps she was 'born' with.
I'm assuming AMC used the 5 X 4.5" pattern back then with, what, a six inch width?

FOUR inch width! four! think VW Beetle tires.

if ytou can afford it, get custom steel wheels made. about $100 each. they're true! straight! the lug holes are ROUND! no rust! mine do not lose 1 PSI per YEAR. bad news: hubcaps don't fit. good news: they're "smoothies". you can get chome caps with them.

you could get 6" wide wheels (and so buy actual existing tires) and specify the offset so that the "kingpin" location centers on the tire patch, thereby preserving the lovely factory easy steering, but with modern tires.

i've got 16" x 7" steelies on my '61 american. i still love them.

i got mine from Stockton Wheel.

Tomj I think his car is a big Rambler, not an American.   Is that true, IowaTom?   Joe

Big Rambler?  Isn't that an oxymoron?  :-)  Is this considered big?

That's a big one, as opposed to an American.   Joe

Only option for going wider and using original AMC hubcaps on Rambler 15s is to have the old 15" wheels re-rimmed if you can find a set.
