Anyone know a source or a worthy substitute for the main wire harness grommet that goes through the firewall neat the steering column and brake master cylinder/booster?

What year? MY 71 has round stiff sponge rubber plugs and a trapizoid like plate.
I think Motor City or APD may have something. GEEZO! I didn't think... I pulled my rubber grommets and stored them. Can take a few pix and post them... let me know which one it is so peeps know what exactly you need. |

'69. The hole is a bit of an oval. I imagine there's some kind of generic item I can use or modify.
I looked around APD, I'll peak at MotorCity next.

On 69 the Main Harness "Grommet" at the fire wall pass through is MOLDED to the harness. That goes through the hole at the bottom of the plate and is captured by the plate when you put the 4 bolts back in....half circle on firewall and half circle on plate. Since it is molded to the harness, there was never a "replacement" part offered......so you are going to have to get creative. If it would help, I have a coupe of parts harnesses that I could cut several inches off the harness on either side of the harness and you could try to extract it and re-attach to the wiring with a bonding material.

Hey Troy,
As Ross has already stated, you need to get creative. I have used several different methods over the years. Stealing seals, grommets and parts from other vehicles that are a close match and installing via different methods. It is amazing what you will find walking around a pick-your-own-parts junk yard. Then modify to fit your application. On street rods and restorations, sometimes we have made a small metal plate and installed a rubber grommet. Cut the grommet on one side, slip the grommet over the wire harness and then install the wire harness with grommet into the pre-determined sized hole of the plate and install grommet/wire harness. Install plate to fit the firewall opening using some type of sealant/gasket to keep out unwanted contaminants. This method is not always exactly like the original, but is very neat and professional looking.

Since I have a later Javelin, the seal in question could be custom made by molding the original, using a non stick silicone reusable fast form, and 3M weather strip adhesive to make a rubber mold of the basic form. Since it drys a bit stiff, you can drill out the center and cut a side to fit around like a collar. The nice thing about 3M adhesive is you can make it have any rubbery apperance you like. Some grommets have a shiny appearance and others a dull dark charcoal dull look. I have actually have done both looks on some custom rework on my own Metro door seals to make them look OEM in form and fit. One tube could possibly make 4 to 5 grommets depending on physicals of the grommet in question. Being a bit pricey at $15.00 a tube to test with, makes such an effort worth while. Only if my Javelin was a 69, I probably would be recreating a nice replacement grommet by now.

Part number? There seems to be more than one choice. |

3M 08008 The stuff is messy as heck, but I find Goo Gone pretty good at removing from skin and other non rubber or cloth items. It drys fast, but in molding forms... I would let it sit 5 or so hours. Leaving it untouched before setup, will keep it shiny. A damp finger with light rubbing as the surface is lightly tacky will make it look a lot like weather strip, a dark charcoal and dull. |

Thanks for the great info. Armed with that, I got really "creative". I dug up under the dash to pull down what's left of the original rat's nest harness and there found the grommet still attached on the inside. The original harness and wiring throughout the car is a disaster and I've already ordered another. Now I'll just have to figure out the best way to transfer the grommet to the new harness without trashing it. As you said, looks like it was molded right to the harness. If I can't slide it, then split it and reseal.
