I am in search for a window regulator for my 65 American (2dr) driver's door. Are these items left or right, or universal?? What range of years/models utilized the part I seek??   Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Left and right are not the same; they are mirror images of each other. Also, a hardtop uses a different regulator than a post car. 64 through 69 have the same doors, so the regulators should be the same. Another model, maybe the Classic, used the same doors.

Not sure, but I believe the Classic door is longer which would mean that the window regulator would be different than the American. '64-'69 American hardtop is the one you want.

63-64 Classic use the exact same door shell, window frame is aluminum.
That regulator should work.

I've never measured the door lengths to see if they changed on the 65-66 Classic Ambassador.
I could though.

Hard top or sedan?

According to my Hollander interchange manual you can use the regulator from the same side from the Hard tops And convertibles from these models.
64-69 American, 63-64-65-66 Classic & Ambassador, and 65-66 Marlin.
66 American SW, 66 American 2dr, 82 J10, 70 Hornet, Pound, Va.

Hardtops/convertibles have two arm regulators and sedans have one arm regulators.
I don't have one for a hardtop but I repaired one that I had by replacing the sector gear. If you have a broken regulator maybe it can be fixed.

I think the vendors have a new sector gear for that application if your problem is broken teeth on that gear.  And in 1966 I think they changed mid-year to a Type II version of that regulator.  Get a good look at your part and then call one of the vendors like APD or Kennedy American and explain your problem.  They might have a solution other than finding another used regulator.   Joe
