go quicker?
11.49 was the time, do you think maybe 11.0's to .10's are possable judging by the 120 speed? i'm going to be either getting a new converter or possably send mine back to JW and have it loosened up to around 4000. thinking of changing out the V/B for a T- Brake one we will see! i know the streetability will suffer a little with the converter, i'm not worried about that. a buddy has a duster that runs 10.90's and his mph is 123-125 so i don't think i'm too far off whats your opinions? |

For 120 mph, 11.49 is not optimal. You should be able to get a very low 11.
What is your 60 foot time? For reference, my Gremlin ran 11.3 at 120 mph with a 1.55 sixty. That was at 3,000 pounds and foot braking with a 4,000 rpm converter.

the best 60 out of it this year was a 1.71, thats where it suffers. its got a JW 3000 stall in a TH400 with a manual V/B, i figure a 4000-4200 will help that considerably, but kill the DD status of it.

I got 10.90's out of my old blue Gremlin years ago with 120mph trap speed...IMO your th400 itself is holding you back a good bit...I know you are already vested in it but I would be looking into a different transmission...

well Jim i do have a 727 that was in the wagoneer i got the 401 from, maybe i should look into that, the flex i got has both bolt patterns for the converter so i'd be good there, just have to spring for a new shifter for it.

A buddy of mine bought a B+M pro ratchet and it had the arms for chrysler, ford and chevy... The 401 t.f. would be a good trans....but you can spend alot of money on one...Make sure you have a shield on it..lol
If you go t.f. make sure you buy a v.b. that has low band apply...a+a is who I bought mine from...then you can buy a billet drum...then billet pump gears..then roller governor support....then billet servo's..and on and on...
I guess thats what makes a th400 a more affordable choice..in addition to being dependable......but they rob alot of hp....

another bit of info..a local guy always ran a 3 gear planetary in his 727...He switched over to a 4 gear planet with no other changes it slowed him down .02...
the 401 727's use a 4 gear planet and the 360 727's use a 3 gear...I've always ran the 3 gear planet and never have had a problem...

I (for the most part) agree with all of the above, in as much as a lighter transmission will speed you up. There are different ways to get there though. The lighter trans will get you to the stripe sooner, improving overall et, but your sixty foot times say you have to hit the tires harder. I think more converter will do that regardless of the trans.
The other thing I would say about a 4,000 + rpm converter is I don't think it would preclude you from street driving it. With 4.10 gears, the car will move along smartly without really working the converter at all. Therefore not coming close to it's stall speed and any real heat buildup. Any heat you don't want, can be gotten rid of with a decent cooler. You do have to drive lightly on the pedal though. No trailer pulling so to speak. If you would like a race 727, 5,000 rpm converter, flexplate, shifter and blanket, I have one I would let go.
