I'm going to attempt to add a set to my Humpster, but would like them to be in top shape first! I've seen some folks mention we have a member who does this but I can't seem to recall his handle.

I have a pair from a '69 AMX which have been sandblasted, painted and
new urethane bushings installed. Also have the in-frame brackets needed
to mount them. $200 for the pair.

Steve, I have everything I need, but would I be able to talk you out of the in-frame bracket parts? I was just going to fab some up otherwise.

Somewhere I was reading a post on how they had installed the in frame brackets on a car that wasn't equipped with torque links. Instead of cutting the frame open, they had cut open the floor of the car above the frame and dropped the brackets in from the top, then welded them in place and re-welded the floor pieces back into place.
I wish I had dimensions on the frame brackets, from the pictures in this thread, they don't look that difficult to fabricate. |

Here is a post I started 3,794 years ago on the old board. Yes, I have been sitting on these torque links for 5 years! (shows how quickly I get around to projects).
http://amccars.net/cgi/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1270779658 There is a decent picture about halfway down of the "drop in" style frame bracket. I seem to recall a thread prior to this one where somebody had a dealer "How To" instruction sheet on how to add these to a Javelin. That paper had drawings and detailed how to cut the floor open, slip in the bracket, and then screw down some sheetmetal back over the holes now cut in the floor. Looked like a pretty slick setup. But I don't know who posted it and a search reveals nothing. Still, in for a penny and all that... |

Mine was a dealer install. As far as the bushings-> Ross does the the bushings 100% correct. When the links are reinstalled and adjusted properly by the book, they work like intended, which is to say extremely well. They need the bushings to work like the pressed in bushings do. I never did use the poly bushings I bought before I talked with Ross. They look and work like new - the difference was very noticeable. I absolutely need a set for my 73, I can't keep the wheels solid on the ground. Will be looking around....

Very interesting upgrade Fluffy73, I might have to think about doing this on the Hornet. I think it would work better than a sway bar.

I put a Spirit/AMX sway bar in the back of my Hornet which is a 304/5speed car, so it can launch pretty hard. Without the sway bar, you had to be right on the money or else it was axle-hop city. WITH the sway bar has helped immensely. Not only with handling but if you launch hard, the back end of the car simply lifts up slightly and the one tire (open diff) becomes smoke. The goal with the yellow Hornet now is a 3.54 gear with a Twin Grip. I'm sure the Torque Links would help, but the sway bar works good with the added bonus of keeping the back of the car level in a hard corner. Even with 14" tires, the big sway bar up front and the 3/4" bar in the back, she handles phenomenally well (for a 40 year old car, anyway). Many have been amazed by it's corner carving prowess. |
