I obtained my first AMC that was something other than a late model used car in 1979. And I have yet to see seat covers available for them.
Upholstery is not cheap, either OEM equivalent or something that is just nice to have. Having said that what is acceptable is a function of the individual owners requirements.  Many cars have been put on the road with Mexican Blankets covering the clapped out remains of the seat.
I had these done for my Hornet Sportabout. I am totally satisfied with the end result. I expected quality because that is what I paid for and that is what I got.
But I had to save my coins to have it done, these were custom built by a good upholsterer here locally and not only was the upholstery fitted but the seat had been damage by time and required repairs to the springs. The price for front and back hit 4 figures but were contemporary to prices I have paid in the past for equal quality. This is the back seat and as it is a station wagon type vehicle it has to fold flat to create a storage area.  The front was form fitting and redone for greater comfort.

I'm currently in contact with automotiveinteriors.com Diane is looking up the pattern for my 68 American. I'm just waiting for a call back. I'll have the correct seat cover design but the colors won't be original. Not a bother to me as its not worth more or less either way. After I was done designing my seats online it came to 576 with shipping. Not bad for front and rear. Labor is involved but I did my 64 nova seats with hog rings when I was like 17. It's not too bad just labor intensive. You get out what you put into it with the covers. I'll keep posted as this progresses. If it works out that would be great!! I don't have a year and 2k to drop on SMS seats

These are automotiveinteriors covers from about 10 years ago.
They are on 1995 Ford Ranger seats.

There is a lot to be gained by taking your time and adding little bits of foam to fill some areas that are soft. They are not your good custom shop covers, but are respectable and I have received good comments on the look. I'd like to have the seat backs redone, but doubt I ever will. I don't care for how the piping is done.

SMS has the real deal original material so you can just repair what is need needed rather than redo the whole seat. My BBG Jav is parchment vinyl with GlenGarry plaid instead of ventilair vinyl inserts. SMS had the exact perfect matching plaid material.

Yea I contacted them a couple years ago about my gremlin seats. He emailed me back a picture of the exact match. Pretty awesome. I found out after I ordered my covers that you can actually send your own fabric to auto interiors to have them sewn up. So I could have ordered SMS fabric and sent it to auto interiors to have them sewn, then I install them. Oh well its not a full concours restoration do its not a huge deal. I gota remember that for next time though

Recently purchased a 61 Rambler American and am trying to find a nice but also economical way to restore the interior.  The interior is in decent shape, but needs some attention.  Thanks for the links to these companies.

I got the seat covers for my American from automotiveinteriors.com I didn't get a chance to put them on yet but they look good. They don't have seams on the bottom with the metal reenforcement like the factory does, they say to just over lap the vinyl and hog ring it.

SMS auto fabrics has most upholstery materials for our cars.  You will need to find a local upholsterer to install or teach yourself how to do it.  It is not that hard to do.

Has anyone used Seat Covers Unlimited?  Little less expensive, but not as original.  I know you get what you pay for, just asking if anyone has had any experience with them.  I've put in a request with Automotive Interiors since I like their options better.
