Have a 68 Javelin. Both driver and passenger window tracks need to be fixed. The glass is ok, but off the tracks, and the tracks on the driver side are bent. I'm in the Madison WI area. Is there a national chain auto glass place that I could go to or do I need to find a specialist? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

I think you will need to look for used glass, the only aftermarket stuff right now is for the '68/'69 AMX sides.  Ebay or post here on the wanted section.

Any reputable bodyshop should be able to fix your track or replace it when you find one.
Be prepaired to pay $50+ per hour times 4 hours to get them back in shape.

They are a real pain in the arse to remove & repair/replace

Can you elaborate on what is bent. If possible with pics? Sometimes bent tracks ( depends on how they are bent) can be repaired by you once the tracks are out of the car.

Bent usually breaks when you attempt to straighten - that cheap metal will bend once but doens't bend back very well.

I'd personally find some good used tracks. ANY good auto glass place can do the repair, however.

I'd take it all to them first before doing anything. If you were closer, I'd do it for you. I've done a lot of them over the years.............. it's not hard but DOES take time to do it right. This is one thing I agree, almost anyone here could do it if they are careful, follow directions and don't get in a hurry. You have one shot at it.........  What ever you do, don't knick or chip the glass on the edge. CLEAN the @#$% out of it if you do it yourself. Glass outfits will, or should use urethane to put it back. In the old days, we used the tape, and I've got a full factory roll of it here - and probably alway will as I no longer use the tape, I use urethane on all that I do.

Most of the better chains or even the mom and pop shops should easily recognize what needs to be done. Take measurements, pictures and make sure you know exactly how far the glass is from each end of the track. Mess that up and you are, well, your canoe will have no paddles.

I agree, the hardest part of all is putting them back after they are fixed and spending the weekend adjusting them!

First off we need to know what you are talking about. hassyfoto I know this is not at you just adding to what you are asking "elaborate".

Tracks = what the roller move in. Most of the time have old hard grease in them that keep the rollers from rolling that leads to the channels pulling off the glass.

Channels = This is the part glued to the bottom of the glass. They pull off the glass when the rollers don’t roll. The glass needs to be centered in the channel when gluing back on. They also need to be glued to the glass in the right place or you can not adjust the glass to fit/seal right.

Rollers = White wheels that are part of the window regulator.

Regulator = What the window crank is attached to and is bolted to the inside of the door. When out looks like a big X.

Does anyone have a side to side measurement for reference? I need to re do my left door glass and If anyone knows say a measurement from rear of glass to the start of the window channel that should help in lining up to make sure the window is in the right place and seals up like it is supposed to.

Possible AMC service bulletin showing dimensions?

I glued mine in 1990 and it finally failed...but when I did it in 1990 it was off slightly and I had to roll the window down just a little to keep the glass from contacting the quarter window molding.

This is for a 70 javelin btw

Good question I'm sorry no one had an answer.

I have a driver window issue as well. I'm no mechanic but thought I could handle this. My glass seems to have two channels (where glass is glued). There's a forward piece and a rear piece; each about 8-9 inches long. The glass came out of the forward channel and is SOLID in the rear. I'd like to un-Glue the rear before I try to manipulate the metal parts; looks like the front channel has disengaged from the scissor mechanism.  But it's original and correct glass so I first want it safely out before doing anything.

I seriously doubt the glue is original. There's some looks like hardened black tar, and some khaki looking stuff.  All as solid as a rock.  Would heating help?

Any ideas, suggestions; any info at all would be appreciated.

I did my glass a few yrs ago and this is the measures I came up with

The dimensions I used should be good as I used the old glue lines as reference and the window fit great.

13 3/8" from the rear edge of glass to the front of the rear channel, then 26 1/8" to the rear of the front  channel, and ended up 12 11/16" between the two channels.
