I seriously doubt the glue is original. There's some looks like hardened black tar, and some khaki looking stuff.  All as solid as a rock.  Would heating help?

Any ideas, suggestions; any info at all would be appreciated.

Most glues & adhesives are designed to break down at ( about 400 degrees). I good heat gun ( available from HomeDepot or Lowes, etc.,) will get hot enough to complete the job. In reference to the black tar like substance. This sounds like a typical general adhesive or it could be typical urethane glass adhesive. In either case, the principle is same. Heat the adhesive(s) to 400 degress and start applying pressure to remove the glass from the adhesive or channel.
This is a link to I-CAR ( which is training to professional auto collision repair specialists). Scroll down to section 9.2. Although this training is for a panel replacement, the methods for glass is the same concept.
