I hate gas-pressurized shocks.  They amplify every small bump in the road.  I've tried KYB and the Gabriel "Classic" shock, which is supposedly for classic cars, and they're all too harsh. Eaton Detroit Spring offers hydraulic shocks and even has a video about their advantages on old cars (https://www.eatondetroitspring.com/products/shocks/) but all they offer for us are KYB gas shocks.

Anyone know where to buy good old-fashioned hydraulic front shocks for a '72 Javelin? I know Koni makes some hydraulic shocks, but they don't seem to have any listings for AMC.

Try lowering air pressure in the tyres a couple psi or three ... keeping within loading recommendations.
I have KYBs on my '74 Javelin and they are fine for me.   If I want a smoother ride, just lower the tyre pressure a bit.   If I want better handling, increase pressure.   Adjustable shocks might be a nice addition, if within your budget.  IIRC, 70 or so Mustang front and 68/69 Camaro rear interchange to later Javelin, so there are adjustable options out there.

Hope this helps,RD

i had the same problem with my early American. far too harsh.  i used the PDF Monroe catalog, which has length and mount type data.

i suspect "catalog collapse" has them all substituting one shock for many apps and they fit, but not much else.

i measured my old ones (compressed and extended) then very tediously went through every single shock and marked the ones that would fit.

then for each marked shock googled the curb weight (not factory "shipping" weight) for each app's car. i ended up with Toyota Starlet and some small Volvo.

very happy with the results. cheap too.

Cam, I hit the local car parts swap meet today &  picked up a 1983 Monroe shocks catalog.

Your Javelin used a non gas Monroe Matic # 3053. There are a couple of these currently on ebay.
Monroe also offered a Radial Matic # 5709, & VIP, a cost leader, #8005, both non gas. None on eBay that I could find in a quick search.

The catalog also has a part # interchange. Here are a few. 8005 is Gabriel 26017, Delco 351-34. 3053 is Delco heavy duty 501-92, Delco Big D 500-164, Gabriel Strider 45164,  Gabriel Red Ryder 42020.

The catalog also shows what the 3053 # fits. It is most 70 up AMC's & most small to mid size Ford & Mercury 66-80.

Another disadvantage of gas pressurized shocks is they lift the car up a small amount, so they need to be on before -if you are running them- before setting the ride height/stance.

The Bilstien B6 gas units on my 72 seem to work good, and that car is pretty low to the ground and level

If you are willing to spend the money, QA1 makes non gas charged shocks for 1966-1970 Ford Fairlane/Torino that likely fit the front of your car. TS503.

For the rear, look at TS703, TS704, or TS802.

Change these part numbers to TNxxx for non-adjustable shocks.

I ordered a pair of Ridetech rear shocks for mine today since I already have their coilovers in the front. The part number is 22199845 in case if anybody's interested. I'll report how they ride when I get them on but my dealer had me call and talk to a guy at Ridetech and after he explained how the valving works, it sounds like I'll be pretty happy with them. Trying to get a better ride for these long roadtrips! Big smile

Thanks for to info Mopar_guy. I have RideTech's on another car that used to have non-gas Koni's and the ride quality improved considerably with the RideTechs. Especially on speed bumps.
