On the surface it seems like a bad idea. Better the wheel contact the brake drum & axle flange than have another layer in between.

I'm wanting to change to a 275 tire on my '69 AMX. The style of wheel I have is a 15"x8". I have two pairs, one with a 4.5" backspacing and another with 5.5". The 4.5" wheel pushes the current 255 tire outwards to where I wouldn't want it to go any further out. The 5.5" wheel brings in the same tire too close to the leaf spring which necessitates a 1/4" spacer. Ideally a 5" backspace wheel would be the ticket but they don't make one.

Are there any pitfalls to drag racing with spacers on the drive wheels?

So long as your studs are long enough to still allow the minimum thread engagement per NHRA rules. The same length as the diameter of the stud then I do not see why using a a 1/4" spacer is any problem. However I would use a spacer made of a billet aluminum or a steel spacer and not one made from a cast aluminum.

Thanks for the advice. The other option would be to have the 4.5" wheel machined back to 5" but that would likely compromise the integrity of the wheel.

Perhaps roll the fender flanges over to gain additional clearance?

The 5.5" backspace wheels put the tire against the leaf spring not the fender.

Ive seen 8 sec cars use spacers, its all about clamping force and flat surfaces. just like using a spacer on a flexplate or torque converter

I have spacers on mine . I also have the 5/8 studs

It might be hard to see but I have dual pattern wheels. I was gonna run 5/8 studs but just decided to run (10) 1/2" studs with 3/16 spacers
It has been 1.277 60 ft. best
