I'll buy every 3/400 dollar 401 out there and ship it to the East Coast.  A fair deal for a core 401 would be 800-1000 complete, intake to pan with the brackets and such.

I paid 500.00 for known complete usable core. Heads, rods, crank, block, intake, to all usable or i would be refunded or given usable parts for any found bad. That was 8 Years ago..

I do every now and then see unknown 401 on craigslist for 200 to 300. But buyer beware..

Here in Kenosha it is typical to see Complete 401 cores or "RAN WHEN PULLED" for 800-1200. You can sometimes find rare deals for less but not typical. Last one I sold was 750 complete but apart.

Having a discussion with my dad on this build. (66 Marlin) The car will be smoothed out and bagged. 8.8 Explorer rear narrowed to fit. He's saying I'm crazy to not Chevy power it they are definitely cheaper and reliable and the parts are at every auto zone. I know how you guys feel about this. I am extremely unfamiliar with the 401, like durability and longevity or even parts availability. I know the cranks and blocks aren't cheap.

Parts can be found and it will be just as expensive and durable as a Chevy AND be unique! Keep it AMC so you don't get shunned! LOL

I'm not sure where this idea started that Chevrolet engines are "more reliable." I've seen some stock AMC V8's take horrible abuse and still run quite well with plenty of power. Chevrolet's may be cheaper in the short term, but after you've driven a car with an AMC V8 you won't think about a Chevy powerplant.

The SBC got it's reputation from the best oiling system of it's day
and in this respect they have never really been beaten. The pump is in the pan
and the crank is oiled first.

Compact, light weight (for it's time) and possessing a super light
reciprocating assembly it's obvious why the SBC dominated and continues to do so.

Chevys have flaws but they are easily overcome.

AMC's are my favorite in part because they are NOT a SBC.
