What is everyone running for a distributor?
Factory (GM) points style? With breakerless conversion? BID? Later Ford style? Aftermarket Unilite? MSD? one of the kazzillion HEI conversions? I'm running a Mallory Dual Point, with the 2-piece cap that I really like, but it's non-vac advance, and I want to go vacuum advance this time around. I may just put an original single point factory distributor on it with a conversion kit, the HEI's are so cheap to buy but I am not a fan of their size or fit. So what are you guys running in your V8's and why? Thanks! |

Stock 1964 distributor here, but a previous owner put in a pertronix module (and high output coil).

I will be running a custom modded late big block Caddy HEI, lathed down to exact AMC specs for fitment.
Will start with a GM module for mule brake-in, with factory cam and heads. Then move on to a performance module setup with performance add-ons. The one reason why I like the tall distributer is that it gives a lot of clearance working around stock brackets. Being a bit tucked in with stock height, made points adjustment more difficult for me. If it was somewhere mid way of the tall HEI unit, then I would think of the possibility of an electronic conversion kit. There is noting wrong with points, just it needs more maintenance. For now the HEI seems more of a customised look setup, that is easy to obtain parts for over counter. Now that my setup may be able to run a super charger along with AC on my build, the added height will help in super charger and its bracketry fitment. |

Stock factory distributor, no changes at all in both Javelins.
Before my 4.0 Eagle swap, I was running a genuine GM HEI from a Chevy pickup with a 250 in the 258.
I have since installed that into another Eagle I'm working on for someone else. I would consider a mag for my 73 but the guy who does that work had to quit due to heart conditions. |

I never really minded the points,
though getting good condensers seems to be a problem for many these days. It's the lack of a vacuum advance that I want to change, just hoping for a little better gas mileage when everything is said and done. Seems you can still get an AMC Motorcraft distributor fairly cheap, maybe running that with an MSD box is the best option(?) I've been running a Mallory Unilite since 1988 (has it really been 30 years?). When I got it everyone said buy an extra module because they fail, so I did. It's still in a drawer in my toolbox in the original package. The one from 1988 was in my Jeep when I sold it, I have one in my AMX, and there's one in the engine that's going in my Rambler. Mallory was bought out by MSD, so I don't think the Unilite is available anymore.

I have been using an old Mallory dual point with the funky two piece cap also. Original points and condenser in it also.
I did not find the points or even condensers hard to find, Mallory carried them up recently, maybe still do. The most recent condensers don't look vintage, which is a problem for me, but functional ones don't seem hard to find. The only thing that is truly hard to find are the caps. I have stockpiled a few, but they are not getting any easier to find. I like that dissy, except for I would also like to have a vac advance too. I find it works very well otherwise, with decent spark and reliable advance. I have personally had more issues with advance than points. I would use a stock distributor if I was going to replace it at all, possibly with a Pertronix or similar setup. Chris |
