Ya, color clash has been a normality of this car from the time I first saw it for sale. All parts of the car that aren't the outer skin are brightly contrasted red. The person just masked glass and chrome (poorly) and then went after it with a shaker can, the over-spray in the door jams and hood/trunk is quite ugly. Having the car a uniform color would be pleasant. |

Now, that is one beautiful AMX! Dick Teague and his team sure had the right formulas with that car. Do you happen to know if '70 Javelins ever have an option for center stripes similar to yours? Thanks for the link to Phoenix Graphics. Those stripes are a little out of my price range for now. Maybe I'll splurge in the future if I decide not to do the stripes with paint.

The '70 Javelins and AMXs had the side stripes due to the power bulge (hood scoop). The over-the-top stripes of the '68 and '69 AMXs wouldn't work with that too well.

Unlike the sea of boring grey cars out there, this red car does stand out! I'm always on my best behavior when driving it.

That's an excellent explanation, thank you. The stripes on the inside of the door skins look just like the Phoenix Graphix you linked to (pic below). I'd say that's a match. Thanks again for that link, BTW. I am really thinking of trying to paint the stripes. Have you seen anywhere, any sort of rough dimensions of the stripes? Thanks |

Ha! My grey car already stands out ... I too will have to practice a serious amount of control. As it is now, I don't use the secondaries or go above about 3,500 RPM more than about once a week, just getting on the highway or something is about the only times the 'ol machine gets to stretch its legs. Totally off subject: Is it just me, or is it the people with slow cars are more likely to try racing at stoplights? It seems that the guys with actual fast cars give respect and attempt to not provoke an AMC v8 into action.

Frankly, I would not attempt to paint the C-stripes. I've seen people paint the over-top-stripes on the '68-70 AMXs and even the t-stripes on the '71-74 AMXs, but it's a lot of work to get it perfect. Phoenix Graphics may have a reverse template they'll sell you, but for the money, just buy the stripes. I've used them for c-stripes on my '69 Javelin and over-the-top stripes for my '68 AMX.
Also in both cases, I hired a local stripe specialist to install them. Last month, he said installing the double roof stripes on my '68 AMX was one of the hardest things he's done. Why? because there's not much to measure from to make certain they're perfectly centered and straight. Even my brother, a body and paint professional, does not attempt to install stripes.

if you are trying to keep it original id go back to red/red otherwise personal opinion I would go with some shade of black that way if you decide not to paint the engine bay, door jambs ,and trunk the red would go with the black with a few other red accents

Unless you're doing a correct restoration, paint it whatever colour you want. That's an easy detail to correct if a future owner wants to go the concours route. Yes, it will impact the re-sale value to some extent, but now is the time to decide the direction of the project. If you're not going concours, then don't worry about it. The biggest thing you can do to retain value is to keep all the original parts, even if you're not using them. A restorer will pay more for a modified car with all its original bits than without.

Had a red '68 AMX. Went with the original color. But I've always been partial to Bittersweet Orange
