The second picture shows the ambient temperature sensor for the TCS (transmission controlled spark) system. I think the first picture might show the TCS solenoid vacuum valve. That TCS system was used to control NOx emissions during the early 70s. If that Hornet is older than 1976 you can disable that system in CA. Joe

Especially if it's an automatic and there's a four wire connector where the NSS and backup light connections go - then I suspect he's right about TCS.
Mid-70s cars with automatics had that in many cases. |

That vacuum valve is supposed to be mounted to the rear of the engine.

Ok, I was wondering if that was TCS stuff based on my wiring schematic. Weird system the way AMC (I guess everyone?) did it. The 727 only has the 3 terminal NSS.
Thanks guys. More parts for the parts shelf then. |

Bill D is talking about the NSS switch connector at firewall having the 4 wire connector, not at the actual NSS. That is where AMC tied the Speed sensor for the TCS switch int the harness.

Oh ok. That makes more sense.
While we’re on the subject of vacuum, sensors, switches, etc., are both of the vacuum lines running into the engine bay through the A/C hoses grommet for the vacuum heater control valve? And why two separate supply lines then? I’m just gonna run them to a T, I suppose. I have an extra nipple on the back of my manifold from when I ran a TH350 with a vacuum modulator. |

I had that part on our '73 Gremlin X, 258 and 3-speed. I had no idea what it was or where it came from. Still have it in a box. |
