glad to hear!  when you get it back together try some radiator flush and install a back flush kit in the heater hose. that'll clean out the heater core.

I actually bought an inline coolant filter as well to keep my re-cored radiator from possibly clogging.

I believe they go into the oil galley. I always put a little pipe dope on those threads.

You don't need a radiator back flush kit....a buddy showed me how to backflush the heater core.....just disconnect the hose from the water pump that goes to the heater.  Take your hose nozzle (hopefully you have a spray nozzle) and push it into the hose and turn on the water.  Whatever crap is in the core will exit the water pump (area).  At least, it worked for me.  And, while you're at it, you might look into replacing all of your cooling/heating system hoses, as they may be gunked up, too.  Thermostats are cheap replacement insurance as well.

now that you have gone that far jack up the car and take the drain
plugs out the sides of the block  and watch the crud that comes out
since I have worked on AMCs quite a bit I made up two hoses about
4ft long with fittings to thread into the block where the drain plugs
came out .now tou can back flush the block with water from the garden
hose and as soon as you can before the water drains out , if you have an
air compressor blow air in the hose to force the water backwards through the
block and out the water pump outlets you won't believe what comes out
good luck

I had read stories of people doing that but also heard that getting the plugs out and back in can be a nightmare.  Any suggestions?  This one has been sitting for 30 years and really would like to clean it out best I can.

If you remove the freeze plugs you'll have to install new ones.  I've never done it, but if you search this or other sources, you can find out how to do it.

No expert here so searching the web big time but I was kinda getting the impression that a freeze plug and a drain plug were 2 different things or maybe the same but 2 different ways of implementing.  Seems like I've seen something akin to a metal cap tapped into a hole and also seen an actual plug with a square or hex head.  I was thinking that ramblin rod was referring to the plug with threads as opposed to a metal cap.  Please straighten me out.  Also, on a 290, approximately where is the screw type plug located.

In the block, I believe the correct vernacular is freeze plug.  The idea is that if your block freezes, the plugs would pop out first, instead of the block cracking.
