JB weld will work. I would definitely remove the intake to drill/tap, and clean before refitting. Not worth the risk of swarf damaging something. They seem like blind holes but a tube for the automatic choke is actually inside there, it runs from one side to the other. They eventually burn out which is probably why the manifold is a spare. Maybe someone can chime in but I don't know how you would replace the tube inside. On later models the tube is connected to a plate which unbolts.

I don't know that the tube inside burns out as much as the external tube that leads to carb is the one that gets burnt out or lost.

The tube works from radiant heat so if it was in good condition having both ends exposed to the atmosphere would not be a problem. It's only when exhaust gas is allowed to enter the tube when problems occur. Especially if you are using the tubes for the automatic choke.

Success! The heat riser holes were definitely my problem. Matter of fact they were also contributing to a sight leak noise that I no longer have. Ended up JB Welding a couple of 1/4" bolts in the holes. Let them cure for a couple of days and wow, no smell and quieter than its has ever been.

It's a very nice balanced and quiet engine once all issues are fixed. It will be much more enjoyable to drive now. Good to see another success story.
