Question; my 232 Six has developed quite a noticeable valve (lifter) tap at both idle and while driving.....to the point the motor has a definite 'miss'.

I believe the engine is from a 1972 Hornet so am not sure whether it is shaft or pedestal rocker equipped.

I still have my 1967 232 longblock that came in my American originally.......if the newer motor has issues, could I used the head, cam and lifters (keeping everything on order, obviously ) out of the older one?

I'd suspect the same. Either a very bad rocker, or the cam/lifter is shot.
I guess I don't see issues with swapping of the parts. But if it's a cam/lifter issue, why not just put in a cam/lifter kit? (new)
But I would probably be considering doing the same - using the parts I have since they were "good".

The 67 head gets oil to the topside thru a hole in the block and are 1.5 shaft rockers. The pedestal rockers get oil to the topside thru the push rods and are 1.6 rockers. Plus the cam specs are different between the two systems.  You need to look at your 72 head, pedestal or shaft?

It gets 'weirder': the engine is quiet when I first start it (cold start that is) but, after a few minutes the lifters start chattering. Checked the oil level, not low and the 'oil pressure' light goes off/stays off once running.

Tomorrow I will throw an oil pressure gauge on and see what happens.

It doesn't take much pressure to turn off the idiot light. Usually about 7 to 10 psi.

Put a mechanical gauge on. I bet the pressure is barely 10 psi when warm, possibly less, so that could be adding to the issue.
Thanks for the "correction" or clarification, tyrod............

UPDATE:

Threw a mechanical oil pressure gauge on and the engine puts out 33 PSI at idle..........with the lifters tapping away.  Confused

I am guessing that I need a heavier viscosity of oil.........I have basically 10W-30 in there now, put it in maybe 600 miles ago.

That depends if you're wanting to fix it or cover it up.

with 33 at idle, if that gauges is accurate, that's good for a AMC 6, so I doubt heavier oil would do much........
