Those marks are not in a great place next to the fillet, especially the first picture. Have the crank magnafluxed by a reputable shop, and make sure to point the marks out. See if there any cracks there.

The tag will break down as follows:
1st Digit is the YEAR
2nd & 3rd Digit is the MONTH
4th Digit matches 7th Digit of the VIN (engine size)*
5th & 6th Digits match DAY OF MONTH engine built
=================
FIRST DIGIT is YEAR
1=1968; 2=1969; 3=1970; 4=1971; 5=1972; 6=1973; 7=1974
Other early years:
1=1959; 2=1960=; 3=1961; 4=1962; 5=1963; 6=1964; 7=1965; 8=1966; 9=1967
Other later years:
8=1975; 9=1976; 1=1977; 2=1978; 3=1979; 0=1980

Copied from Eddie Stakes website. Don't confuse valve cover tag info with casting date codes.

The 401 I have is from a 1972 Javelin AMX. But it was built in 71'.
I've always wondered if the 72' cars built in the last months of 71' were rated at the 71' horsepower ratings and if they were built with the 71' compression ratio?

Only early 71 model year engines had higher compression and a wee more HP. They would have been built in 10/70 to 12/70.

Though late 71 built 401 engines are the same HP as 73 401 engine builds. Just minor emissions changes.

BU1 is correct on the tag decoding. 1959 starts with "1" as that was the first year that coding was used. No zero was used through 1979, and the code repeated every 9 years, so 1 could be 59, 68 or 77. So you have to know a bit more about the engines, as in what sizes were made what years and what size/type you actually have.

See the asterisk (*) by the 4th digit engine size? It's there for a note that says the engine code may be different from the VIN engine code. I don't recall what specific engine codes are different, but they don't always match the VIN code.

Another issue for the V-8s is that the tag is riveted onto a removable part (generator bracket on Gen1, valve cover on Gen2/3). Easy to swap engine blocks or that part and lose the tag unless you make the effort to change it. The valve covers can also be swapped side to side, so if it's not on the passenger side front check the driver's side rear. Rarely are the tags fastened to an aftermarket cover, but I have seen one or two where the owner fastened the tag to the rear of one of the covers (could be either one). That's a good idea!!

The code is stamped on the block on the sixes and AMC/Jeep 2.5L fours.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate all the comments.
Hopefully that crank can be fixed and I made a mistake on the nuts. They are 12 points and not 24. Ouch
I take that the X is just the engine size. X=401..??
I can't remember what my other 401 has on the tag, but I know that it came out of a Jeep Wrangler. I will have to dig it out.

You mean Z not X.

X is used in pre 71 production build
