I'd have to recheck  but the center crank hole in the flanged fly ('70 ) is actually larger if I recall than the non-flanged ( later? flywheel ).

The outer flange on the newer cranks are larger than the outer flange on the older cranks so the old flywheels can't be used on the newer cranks...I physically tried it and it does not work.  And agreed, the newer flyhwheels are centered on the raised flange part of the crankshaft whereas the older flywheels are centered on the outer edge of the older flat flange cranks.

Ok, you are talking about flanges on the cranks? Because you'll notice that the flywheel with the prominent lip around the crank bolt circle is the older 3197219 flywheel in the photo. So if I read the above right, the flange you see in the photo fits around the outer edge of an older style crankshaft.

The older flywheel fits around the outer (and only) flange on the early crankshaft and the newer flywheel fits around the raised flange on the newer crankshaft as mentioned in another post.

The center hole on the older flywheel did not align to anything whereas the center hole on the newer flywheel is what aligns to the raised flange on the newer crankshaft.

For those that may not know about the flange differences, early on the left, late on the right.

Could a late 401 alumium flywheel be used on a 69 390, if balanced to match the 69 flywheel?

Would there be a safety issue with the difference in the flanges?

Rick,
In order to ensure that the flywheel is properly centered you would need to put the 401 crank in the 390.  Without the raised flange, there isn't anything to pilot the late model flywheel on the early crank.

I have a 401 crank with forged 401 pistons on early 390 rods on my hot 390 steet engine setup.  I had to deck the block .020 in order to get a decent deck (.017) and compression ratio (10.17 with 54cc ported and polished 291C heads) when using the 28cc valve relief 401 pistons. Regardless, it runs great with that combo and using the late model 401 flywheel.

I wouldn't try it. There would be nothing but the bolts centering the flywheel.

Thanks guys
I wasn't sure it would work safely.
It's great to get other opinions and advice here!

Hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th.
